After a 3-hour ride, I decided to put those new Moto-Techniques risers on my '98 RT. The installation was simple enough, but upon starting the bike up for a test ride it became apparent that something was wrong. The battery light was glowing (a bit dim, but on) and I noticed the tachometer needle was at zero. Only the top ABS light was on. The bike seemed to be running fine so I took it for a short drive. The tach would work intermittently; when working, the battery light would go out. The top ABS light stays on no matter what. I've checked the wiring harnesses affected by removing/installing the handlebars, but can't see a visible defect. I'm sure this is self-inflicted, as it only started after I removed the bars, installed the risers, and re-installed the bars...any thoughts?

Check to see if you've blown Fuse #1 in your fuse box. Common symptoms for that problem.

It appeared to be okay, but I did not replace it. I'll replace it and see if it solves the problem, although I would like to know what caused it to fail. If it were bad, would the tach work at all? What might be driving the battery light to come on intermittently?

Short answer......you probably pinched a wire when you added the
risers. Check closely for pinched wires. Does your brake light work?
There is a back circuit to the tach. Does your ALT lamp light
with the ignition ON and engine OFF?

Upon second examination, the #1 fuse was blown. Replaced fuse, everything fine after a 3.5 hour ride. Hopefully a one-time occurrence...cannot find any visible damage to wiring...could it be they pinched enough to blow fuse but not permanently damage wiring? By the way, the MotoTechniques risers/set-backs are great! Wish I'd put them on 50K miles ago...

Glad you fixed it! Sometimes the simple ones are the hardest. :scratch
