According to this document all bikes (S1000RR) produced since 2/16/2010 have a 9k rpm limit set at the factory and any bikes produced before then but not delivered to customers are supposed to be set as part of the pre-delivery work:

I test rode a S1000RR today, no rpm limit on the demo bike but it did have about 600 miles on it.

The software is allegedly a rpm limiter based on miles traveled and imposes rpm limits in 3 stages based on miles for the first 600 miles or so. What I heard was fairly restrictive rpm limits but I doubt dealers will install it on bikes they've already got without it. I know if I'd bought one, I wouldn't be hunting the redline on a brand new motor anyway. Hell it would probably take me a few months to get used to that much power on hand so I'd need more break in than the bike

Another part of this rumor is that one new "take apart" bike was blown up being revved in the instruction classes for mechanics in FL (these done by a contractor who does the mechanic training). Allegedly these classes have a cool cutaway version that allows seeing how the variable intake works, etc

I'd wager that the "limit" is set to allow the rider to "adjust" to the beast... After the first service, the rider will have around 10-20 hours experience.

Special order from MOA? I dunno about that.... odds seem pretty slim:D

Does anybody know how the MOA bike is equipped? I haven't really poked around looking for that info yet, so maybe I should look it up rather than ask.

I did ride an S1000RR today. Everything expected, but smoother. I did have a problem keeping the front end on the ground over 10k rpm, but rain mode helped that.

Another non-rumor..... My test ride ended up convincing me so I placed a deposit last week. Supposed to get a Silver RR by the end of this month.

I just poked around for insurance rates for me. 21 year old, single male, with one speeding violation 3 years ago.

It looks like I'm not getting an S1000RR anytime soon. If I could afford the bike, I couldn't afford the insurance! Progressive wanted over $4k/year.
