I am trying to help a friend get an XP (Home Ed.) desktop to share files and printers with a Windows 98SE desktop on a wired Ethernet network.

So far, my efforts are in vain.

The kicker is that I have the same setup in my own home network, and it has not been a problem.

Other relevant info:

- Cable internet (works for both units)
- Linksys wired router
- XP unit has Norton Antivirus/Internet Security installed.

If it works at my place, it should work at his. But as I noted above, thus far I'm stymied.

What suggestions do any of you have for making a W98 computer and an XP (Home ed) computer get it together?

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Rick, try turning the firewall off and see if that helps. I have three XP machines networked in my house, and I had trouble in the beginning until I turned off the firewall. You will then probably have to configure your Internet Security to allow the networking. I hope this helps, but of course YMMV.

Don, thanks. That was exactly the problem.

When I disabled Norton IS and refreshed, the shared folders on each unit showed up.

So ... I went into the Norton configuration utility and staggered around for a while, and "presto," it works! :dunno

Jesting aside, it had to do with the IP addresses and permissions. Thanks again.
