View Full Version : BMW RT1150 Question
Just had my 600 mile service done at Tampa bay BMW.While riding home i noticed the bike shifted much easier and smoother. Is the break in oil any different than the oil that is put in after the break in period?Maybe just my imagination?
Thanks phil
P.S. Anyone going to the sunbeemers rally in Venice florida this weekend? And the first service was not cheap $320.00 does BMW stand for BRING MY WALLET?

Phil,
Imagination? The 600 mile service includes changing only the engine oil and final drive oil.
As to cost, my 600 mile service cost me $143.71, which included a $100 labor charge. At least you will get to ride your RT during the winter!

My 600 mile service was around the $300 figure. Only extra they did was wire in the light on my GIVI topbox, about $20.00.

Sorry about your rip-off dealer but you've been had big time! :banghead The service fee is about $ 150,= give or take a few bucks. Did they do anything else besides changing the engine/reardrive oil ?? They had to have for that amount!?!
I will be at the sunbeemers rally this weekend. Look for a Anthracite 05 LT with a BMR luggage rack and PIAA 910's under the mirrors. :D :D

Phil,
My 600 mile RT service was about $320 and included the required torquing of both cylinder heads at that milage as well. I'm under the impression that having the heads torqued is a one time deal for the life of the bike or certainly not required again until some very high mileage point. I'd be happy to check my records, but the dealer here in Plano is anything but a rip-off so I'd have to believe you got the full required service recommended by BMW. I'll check to see what else was included though it was 19,000 miles ago.

I have checked my old bills and never paid more than $ 400,= for service including the annual with the brakes being fully bled. Maybe I am getting a break or something but even my 05 LT's 600 mile service was $ 140,= including the magnetic oil drainplug I had installed.
I did not want to come over so harsh in my previous post, but I don't know why torquing the headbolts require another $ 150,= or so :dunno
They did change the oil, checked fuel injection. They also told me to be there an hour or so before the service so the bike would cool down enough so they could adjust the valves.I did go back to the service dept and the bike was all torn down plastic was all off etc. They changed all fluids and test rode the bike twice.I was there the whole time. They started work at 9am and finished at 12:30.Parts $35.37 total labor $250.39 shop supplies $15.00 waste fee $3.00 plus tax.The only other dealer in my area is in Orlando. If they are still open.
Thanks Phil
P.S. I think i got gafted

Please remember that, in a service industry, time is money, and removing/replacing the Tupperware does take time. Our shop doesn't use flat rates, we break down by the quarter-hour. But we're not "authorized" either. It seems that at a lot of facilities any part of an hour is an hour.

Phil I had my 600 mile service on my 1200GS at Tampa bay BMW yesterday. It was $280. They used Actevo 20W-50. Here is what was done on my bike, yours should be close to that.

My bike is an '04 R1150RT, so I figured it was "apples to apples" with Phil's. FWIW, my bike is silver, but it's my understanding the color affects the speed, not the service costs. ;)

Other than removing the bottom piece of tupperware to change the oil, is it really necessary to remove the rest of it to perform the 600 mile service?

Below is what BMW recommends at the 600 mile for the RT.
Labor in the book for this service is just shy of 3 hours and probably pretty close to reality. Labor rates vary by dealer, though I doubt if there's any bargins out there from the dealers. The tupperware has to come off and can be time consuming.
600 mile service includes:
Head retorque
Adjust valves
Change oil and filter
Rear drive oil change
Throttle body sync
General checkover.
