The '73 I am working on sat out in the weather for a few years, not good as we all know, taking its toll on the seat and paint and rubber and speedometer needles.
I called a rebuild shop and for several hundred dollars they will rebuild the unit but all I need/want are the needles replaced.

Anybody know where I can get the needles and if you do, share that information with me?

Danke

You can get parts from Palo Alto Speedometer http://www.paspeedo.com/

Remember that these parts are dear and the shipping will be high because they use an insured package. I just got a reset knob for my odometer on my R90... for a plastic part it was $24 plus $12 shipping! BUT..... where else are you going to get one!

Question: why do you need to replace the needles? Is it just from fading in the sun? If so, why not repaint them?

The needles are curled back like the toes on elf shoes or the air brush would be put to work to earn its keep.

I will talk to Palo Alto tomorrow and who knows, maybe go with the white face also.

Thanks DERost!

I believe you'll find that Palo Alto's cost for rebuilding your unit is pretty dern reasonable...I'm thinkin' $129.00 or something like that...a new part is like $250 or thereabouts... several hundred dollars for rebuilding a speedo is totally outta line...

I'd send it to North Hollywood Speedometer myself.

Since Palo Alto was taken over by the founders kid, the reputation has slipped some and the word in to use NHS for reliable service.

Worth a call anyway...

Derost,
I tried to buy a reset knob several years ago and none of the speedo shops would sell me one without a rebuild. I was told that they don't make them anymore and they are keeping what they had for rebuilds. Screw em! I built one out of aluminum. I guess things have changed in the past few years but I won't ever need another one for this bike!

I ordered the needles, $20 each and a white face at $65 from Palo
Alto Speedometer.
When I asked for a rebuild quote five days ago it was $365 for the basic to $470 for the whole works including converting to white face. $550 for a new unit from various sources.

Three years later, give or take, and the /5 will be back to her former glory:D

Based on your recommendation, I'm driving down to Smell A tomorrow to have my speedo rebuilt there...I'll report back on my impressions...turnaround time is a coupla weeks.

Picked it up...they replaced the boogered up cable thread housing, all looks good, if it works good when I get everything up and runnin' and back on the road, I'll be a happy camper!
