Shipping a bike to South America

I am interested in a tour of Chile & Argentina the winter of 2010/11 but I don't want to ride through Central America and Northern South America. I am looking for information on shipping the bike to South America probably to Santiago from southern California but I would consider other places too. I think I would prefer air freight to ocean cargo. Has any one had experience with this?
