The Germans designed the airfilter first with all the associated plumbing :idea , and than designed the bike around it :idea :idea . At the assembly plant the filter is hung from a string and the bike is built around this filter. :banghead
You can therefore find it UNDERNEATH the fueltank which needs to be REMOVED before you can get at it. Guess how you get at the fueltank?? RIGHT ON !! Take the plastic off first !! Good hunting!!
Fortunately once you have done this operation a few times it's faily easy to do. Just don't let the dealer do it as the $20 filter becomes a $250 job. :jawdrop

There is a way to get to the filter without completly removing the fuel tank, its easy to figure out once you have removed the "tupper ware". You may want to consider installing a K&N, to avoid this for a while...

i only have 10000 miles on my bike and decided to wait for a snowy day for that task along with new brake pads, nice hot wood fire allitle bike work and observing the wildlife on long lake from my shop, might as well make a weekend out of this mighty task...matthew

You're gonna need lotsa :coffee .
Take your time or else...:banghead .
After you're done and test rode the bike you can celebrate :jester and have a :drink or two :rofl
Actually it is not THAT bad, just time consuming but you do get to know your bike on a more personal level.
Good luck!
