My R -1150-RT has 50,000 miles. Normal maintance only. Was wondering about the clutch cable. What kind of life span on a typical cable. Looking at one on line. For $155.35 you would think they would last for quite awhile. I have owed many bikes and can never recall a clutch cable failure. What kind of mileage are you getting and have you ever had a failure or am I worring over nothing? Thanks in advance.

My '03 R1150R has a hydraulic clutch. Your RT has a cable operated clutch ?

You might want to check to see if the fluid needs topped off or flushed and changed.

It is quite important to check the brake fluid level and change it every year if possible. This will prevent the fluid from degrading and absorbing moisture. Also, a possible change in color (from clear to dark) may let you know if there is a problem in the slave cylinder. Check Paul Glaves article in this month (December 2009) BMW ON magazine.
I just changed mine a couple of days ago and it is not difficult at all. Good pictures and instructions can be found at http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=10190

Well, I have ridden near all of the 143K miles on my 94 R1100RS here in Wisconsin, in all kinds of dry and wet weather. At 115,000 miles I replaced the original clutch cable, not because I had too, but just as a precautionary measure. I still have the original cable stashed on the bike, as a backup. Though I doubt I will ever need it.

If the cable ends are properly lubed, meaning that little barrel device on the cable must be cleaned and greased at least once a year, the cable itself will last a long time. That little barrel allows the cable to always pull straight at the cable end, without flexing/bending the cable strands. Thats the main reason the cable lasts so long.
