Looking for some info on repainting. I have a 77 r100s and am considering the red/black (I think that's a '78 scheme). Should BMW paints be used, why? How much should I expect to pay? Are there shops that specialize in the BMW paints and schemes? Thanks:bliss

IMHO any high quality paint can be used for your paintjob.
It is not so much the paint anymore nowadays, as it is all about the prepwork that determines a great paintjob from a bad one.
Get some info at various paintshops/bodyshops for cars and go from there. BMW uses the same paint on their bikes as they do on their cars so this should make the job of finding a quality shop easy.
Good luck and please post a pic or two of the bike when finished :thumb

BMW stopped supplying paint kits awhile back but you can buy the correct Glasurit colors from Holt BMW in Ohio. I imagine you are referring to the red smoke paint scheme used on the 78 S. This is a beautiful paint job if done properly. Look in the BMWON for BMW specific paint shops.

If you were on the West coast (Pacific Northwest) I would recogmend a shop in Seattle "Tanks Only" for getting your bike painted in an original BMW paint job. Charles does excellent work. I had him paint my 60' R26 and he even got the pin stripes right! Remember, the pin stripes are HAND painted, don't let anyone talk you into using a pin stripe kit. The story I have heard is they have a little old German lady who use to do all the pin striping on the bikes from the factory.

Last winter, Ihad my 78 R100S painted in Red Smoke Metallic. The paintwork was done by Holt BMW in Athens Ohio.

While not inexpensive, the paint is perfect in every respect.
The turnaround time was about 5 weeks and I can recommend Holt BMW without reservation.
