View Full Version : Rear main seal thickness?

I am changing the rear main seal on my 1998 R1100gs (10/97)
Part # 11111341087 at Max Bmw gives a seal size of (65x85x7)
The actual size on my gs is (65x85x10)
Just curious. Should I have any concerns about the difference in thickness? Or is it just a question of installing the new seal at the correct depth?
Thanks

Two months ago I changed the rear main on my 1997 R1100gs (4/97). I found the same issue. My 97 had the 65x85x10. I replaced it with the only one available (65x85X7). As far as the depth goes, I set it flush with the rear of the engine case. That is the same as the 65x85x10 that I took out. I think that the only difference is the depth of the metal shroud which holds the sealing medium. Why the difference? I have no clue, but 5,000 miles later, no leaks. Be careful and gently shape the sealing medium with oily fingers before installing. Also, I found that an aluminum soda can cut down with a pair of scissors so that only the bottom of the can and about 1/2” of the side remaining slips over the end of the crankshaft. The smooth bottom of the can guides the seal over the end of the crank shaft. Once the seal is tapped in, you can slip the can off the end of the crank. :thumb

Thanks for the input. First time I have heard of the soda can trick.
My existing seal is flush with the case. So I will put the new one at the same depth.
The original seal had a very slight weep. But I was doing a spline lube & figured while I was in there............
