I seem to be having a lot of trouble trying to get the lid back on my air filter cover box. Have had apart before with no issues, usually just tilt up to change the filter, this time took whole way out, and it just wont fit back on. Ahybody else have this? Looing for advice before I get the Dremel out and "machine" a little.

Not meant to be sarcastic, but, are you certain you used the correct air filter?

The air filter is the correct one, K&N I have had for a while, I was just checking for dirt. Forgot to say that I have an 04, Rockster, which is probably the same as a R1150R in the filter box. Thanks for the quick questions.

Make sure that the airfilter is fully seated. then you need to 'fiddle' with the back tabs so that they are inserted in the bottom correctly so that you can close it. I had the same problem and it was a bit of a PIT* but with a bit of patience (take a break if frustrated), I was always able to reinstall.

I second what Emc says. It's a bit of a trick to get it seated.
The first time I did it I wound up installing the cover without the filter just so I could get a feel for it - and reassure myself that it did actually fit.

I had the same trouble and it was the cables going to the battery. Reposition the cables and wala it fits! I was just about ready to take a hammer to the cover too!

On the RS it is nigh onto impossible to get the lid back on without lifting the back of the gas tank. The lid has to approach the box vertically, and anything less than that and the tabs won't catch.

On the RS I remove the rear tank bolt and lift the rear of the tank about an inch. Then the filter cover can be vertical enough to slip in and engage the tabs. I have wrestled with it and actually made it go on without raising the back of the tank but it took so much fiddling that I concluded it was just easier and quicker to lift the tank. Part of the problem is the air temperature sensor probe in the center of the lid gets in the way.

After 30 minutes of frustration yesterday, read the advice offered, went at it with a better attitude, and sleep, and took less than a minute. The key was to start in at a 45 degree angle, then went right in. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.:dance

For me the trick was to start as close to vertical as possible and then rotate down.

I hate to give away all my secrets, but if you do the rear of the cover first, then the front, it goes on in a jiffy. It seems wrong because the tabs are in the front, but it works like a champ.
