I have 2003 1150RT that I would like to replace the rubber only on the hand grips. They are worn and starting to crack but the heat elements are OK. I am looking for part numbers for the rubber only grips.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Max BMW has a nice parts microfiche on their website. Using this you can find the part and part number if it exists. go to http://maxbmw.com/fiche/fiche.aspx

I have checked the Max site but all I could find for a 1150RT were the complete grips with the heat coil.
Are the rubber grips for a model without heated grips?

BMW heated grips have the heating element in the rubber it self. You will need to go a differnt route. Buy aftermaket for both (grip and heating element). Ceapeer than BMW by a bunch $$$$$$$$.

I replaced just the rubber grips on my '04 11150R with a set of inexpensive ($12.00) aftermarket grips. All you have to do is very carefully cut the rubber grip without cutting into the underlying heating element. Since the heating element is larger than the handlebar itself, I purchased two sets of grips that I liked and used the larger diameter RH grip on both sides. I found grips that I like and have had no problems in over a years and 25000 miles of riding.

Not true, Some parts guys just give up too easily, you can just replace the BMW OEM rubbers for $10 each...both use throttle side rubbers. Just did another set two weeks ago. I used a set of needle-nosed pliers to lift the collar end and s-l-o-w-l-y cut the rubber off from the foil wrap on the tubes. It should seperate easily...have done many sets with no foil tears.
Then spray some 409 or similar cleaner inside the new rubbers, slip them into position and let dry a day, some use soap, but it stays slippery from my trials.Be careful to not push all the way against the controls on the throttle side or it will bind when the heat is on.If you have a Throttlelock, you have to split the difference to make both work when the grips are on and expand.
BMW part # 32721458396- Right Grooved Handle (2)
if you do not have heated grips, get one of the lefts also...they come off a lot easier as you are not worrying about the heated foil wrap

The grips are also available from BMW for about $10 each. You will need to order two of the right side grips. #32721458396

Henzilla and Jurgen are spot on with their reference. I did the same to the heated grips on my R1150 GS Adventure and it was easy. used the hairspray method for the slide on lube and it was perfect. Some stealers want to write up a bigger ticket.

I appreciate this thread. My heated grips are fine, but I sought a bit thicker grip...I did use dish soap on a set of foam covers (which worked very well with the heating selected), but they remained slippery after many days. I've removed them and washed them and will try the sprays you've suggested. Thank you. Happy holidays.

Try a pair of grip puppies, $9 from CA Sport Touring

They probably insulate the heated grips a bit but I've seen them on several bikes and they look and feel quite nice.

I installed a set of these about 3 years ago. They have lasted as long as the origional grips. This will be one of my winter projects on mt R-1150-RT. My only complant with the grip puppies is that they take much longer to warm up, but once warm are fine. The extra thickness is not bad. I'm not sure what route I'm going to take this year. Now that I know that I can use 2 right side grips for 10.00 each, I may go back to origional. Still haven't decided at this time. Both options have there pluses and minus like most things.

BTW, anyone know where I can find some hints on how to get the heated handgrip off and on?
Specifically, I just replaced my front brake master cylinder, and I am wondering how to snake the handgrip cable back thru the bars, as I had to pull it out to get the grip off, so I could get the master cylinder off.
TIA!

I do not have heated grips but put a set of Foam Grips from Beemerboneyard.com over my standard grips (R1100R) which were showing a little cracking/wear and love them. Plus they are under $6 for a pair so just add them to your next parts order!
Here is the wording from Beemerboneyard's site....
"Foam grip covers for all stock BMW grips. These slip over the stock grips to give a thicker grip and absorb more vibes. Work well with heated grips too! Not recommended for R1200C grips. They are a tight fit and we recommend using Armorall to lube them for installation."

I replaced my grip rubber earlier with this:
http://www.beemershop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=457&osCsid=014eb9e797f99b7dd3bb5937959b09a4
It requires a bit of time and effort, and judicious application of an xacto-knife when removing the old and some hairspray when installing the new..

I had to pull all of the switch gear and the rest of the "stuff" off the stock bars when I installed my Ricky bars.
The hardest part for me was the heated grip cable. To run the wire back through bars I needed to remove the little plastic bosch torture device from the end of the wire. A lack of the correct tools and understanding of what holds the metal female connector in the plastic housing caused me to butcher the throttle side connector.
Once Jon Diaz walked me through releasing the metal connector from the plastic housing on hand grip wire the second one went well. There is a very small and delicate clip that holds the female spade connector in the plastic housing.
Here is a picture of the connector that got goofed up

In order to replace the munged up connector, I order the replacement connector from Eastern Beaver (http://www.easternbeaver.com). Jim Davis was helpful in ensuring I got the correct replacement parts.
I hope that helps
