I'm seriously 'looking' at a R100GS (it is several hundred miles from me so I can't test ride it) and wondering if I can comfortably fit on it. I'm 6'4", 34" inseam. There is one at a local dealer that I can sit on but probably won't be able to ride it. It seems pretty low to the ground, but then I'm comparing to my XR.
How would it be for a long trip, say 2 weeks, about 200 to 400 miles per day? How comfortable is it for a passenger on short day trips?
I know these bikes have been around almost forever and are pretty much bullet proof.

this isnt apples to apples, but i've got a riding buddy who is in the 6' 7" range, and he rides an older k100 bike. it's definitely lower looking than my r1150, but he's fine on it. (i'm 6') the only mod im aware of is a corbin seat. he's put around 100k on the bike in 10 years, so he certainly rides it, and he has done extensive touring on it.

i don't know how self-conscious you are, but you might try just going down to the dealer and sitting on the thing for an hour, and seeing how you feel. i recommend doing what i do, and giving up all hope of seeming cool. when i buy clothing, i walk around the shop wearing it, and sit on bikes, for about an hour. ive also gone down there and sat on all the aftermarket saddles for ~30 minutes each on various bikes, to see how my rump likes them. once the sales people get it through their heads that i'm one of "those people" then they tend to other customers, and it's no big deal.

take a magazine or book and put it up on the instrument cluster, and hold the grips and read for an hour.

p.s. i am still able to resist the urge to make engine and squealing tire sound effects when i sit on the bikes. im sure if i did this, they'd have a word with me. :D

I absolutely LOVE my GS100!!!!:clap

I'm 6' even and roughly 32-33 inseam and the bike "to me" is more comfortable than my '02RT. Lot's more room, and your legs feel a little more stretched out.
I'm currently using the factory dual seat with a beaded seat cover, which I find very comfortable, and the "lean" angle while sitting on the bike with the hands on the bars, is most comforting. No real back aches,or fatigue. My first real trip with the GS was a blast around Lake Michigan. 13 hours in the saddle the first day,..... no problem!
My next biggest trip was to Florida this past spring, averaging 12 hours a day in the saddle.
This bike ROCKS !!!!!!!!

You also might wanna try a newer style GS,plenty of room for us long legged types! Or better yet,the new 1200GS. I ridden both 1150 and the 1200, and the 1200 feels just like an old airhead
but with "gob's" of extra power!

Im 6-1.75 with a 34 inseam and the bike is not too small. Its great for touring on. The odds and ends you can get for them are SUPER COOL! They may be bullet proof depending on what has been done already to correct their historical weaknesses. Driveshaft failure-corrected by a rebuilt one that has greaseable zercs so you can hit those u-joints with goop every 10,000mi. Diode Board + mounts. Cracking ignition coils.Bike is completely serviceable.Best part is the gravity fed carbs-no need to worry about an EFI component failure on the road

GOODIES:
You can put on a higher output charging system by motorrad elektrik so you can stick some cool PIAA lights on it sans system overload. Jesse bags, they offer a lowerpriced aluminum bag set just for the GS. They are the "original" design but have the new mounting system to them-Real nice!! Laminar lip now has a lip for the stock screen-Look through owners photos and youll see my R/W GSPD with the lip. Parabellum touring windshield.

I dont know first hand but ive read that they handle better in the "Dirt" that the A-Arm oilheads.

Im curious to here about the "Beaded Seat", like wood beads? Im super interested in how they feel on LONG DAYS. My corbin sucks.

I home made it from a $9.00 car beaded (wood) seat from Wally Mart.
Works Super great! LOVE IT!
I'd take and post a picture of my creation, but the computer with the "capabilitys of doing pictures" disappeared to a college down state back in August.:dunno
I do live so of Chicago about 30 minutes, shouldn't be too far from southwest Michigan...
