View Full Version : Going to look at a '01 r11rt Saturday. Comments please

I am going to look at '01 r1100rt soon. It has 39,000 miles, 3 cases, charcoal gray,$5600. Owner bought it after riding a friends but has decided Harley is what his gang rides so the BMW must go. Has had recent service/corrections to the tune of 1800 and will probably need a new rear tire soon.
What should I look for? I know to check service records, owner records. Is there anything special I should look for in a '01 rt? What about this surging issue? It sounds like some have it and some don't.
I have heard the transmission can be expensive to repair. Is this true on the later model 1100s?
Any advice or comments on what to look out for are greatly appreciated.
Thank:clap:kiss you!

For $5,600.00 that is a good deal for a clean well accessorized bike. Surging is a none issue and overdone by the press and many riders. Guarantee the seller will be singin' the blues somewhere down the road!

Make sure you get the muffler. He may have removed it.

Any 1100 from 1998 on is good.
The transmission is the M97, which sometimes need a rebuild when the wave washer fails and the sealed bearings get damaged. My '98 R1100RS has just been rebuilt with about 140,000 miles on the clock - so you have a lot of miles to go before any trouble should develop. The rebuild was less than $800 in my case.
Other things that need periodic attention would be pivot pins/bearings - put the bike up on the centerstand and try to twist the rear wheel left to right and top to bottom. The pivot pins/bearings can be done by yourself if they go bad - $200 for pins and bearings.
Rear shock wears out after xxx miles. I replaced mine at 90,000 miles, but many people replace them around 40,000 - cost is about $1200.
With that low number of miles, I think you should be good to go.

YES the transmission is expensive to repair! My PO paid $3000 to have a rebuilt one installed. Fortunately the problem manifests itself in a test drive by skipping out of second or third gear. You could also offer to change the transmission oil. If it comes out mocha coffee brown thats a bad sign too. But pay attention during the test drive for jumping out of gear.
Im a little suspicious about the "Harley" story. Also about the $1800 in repairs and now its up for sale. Maybe he's got a problem he cant fix and wants out. Ask the guy if you can give him $100 and keep the bike for a week. Maybe its legit maybe its not.

I recommend test driving an 1150RT first. You'll appreciate the better power and the six speed.

in addition to this, "isolate" the final drive from the paralever by resting your shin against it and try rocking the wheel left to right. if you get more than a very tiny amount of movement, it indicates things in the final drive are not within spec. again, isolating the final drive removes the possibility that it might the pivot pins and their associated bearings. (there is also a great after market solution to repairing these pivot bearings with bronze bushings.) do both tests so you know exactly where your free play lies.

Good post.... but, $1800.00 at a shop these days can happen quickly and without a huge amount of work being performed. It is why most of us do a lot, or at least some of our own maintenance and repairs. Caveat Emptor; "Let the buyer beware!"

his "gang" decides what he rides???
they tell him how to dress and what to eat too? :brow :huh
I like my RT too.
Tho I do get surging. Even after the shop did the one and only shop balancing.
Needs it again it seems after about 4k miles which I will attempt ( 1st time).
Truth be told tho If I could I'd go to an 1150 or a 1200RT since I definitely can't afford a K1300GT

Do yourself a favor.
There must be several BMW dealerships in Southern California that you could take the bike for an inspection. I am sure people from some of the local clubs could refer you to a reputable place. Let a seasoned tech ride the machine. Have them check the fluids, brake pads, final drive for wobble, and so on.
Unless you are a wrench yourself, you can amortize the costs over the time you have the bike.
I bought a used 2001 R1100RL, and I had had two different techs ride the bike after I rode the bike. They loved it.
On the other hand, I had an offer on a R850R, and the dealership found a final drive issue that I and the current owner did not. The owner fixed the bike and kept it.
I do, however, agree with other posts in looking at R1150RT's and R12RT's.
The sixth gear is nice. But then again, how fast do you ride anyway?

I agree...that 6th gear is worth every penny. I wouldn't buy a bike without one. I've test driven a R1150R and the gearing is smooth and has a great feel to it. My K1200S and my wife's F800ST both have 6 speeds and it's incredible. Zoom Zoom

Thanks everyone.
My K75 has taken me an "indicated 90mph" and that was plenty fast enough.
I'll need to look at his receipt/work order from the shop that did these repairs/updates. It is an interesting story.
I can do a few things myself. For the tech stuff, I have Matt the German guy in Long Beach available. He made my K75S a sweet machine.
Another thing that is interesting in this offering, the owner has given the bike to his son to sell. Whenever I asked him a question, he held the phone away and talked to dad for answers stating,"I really don't know much about this bike, I'm selling it for my dad."
A bit odd. It still may be worth the ride to see it. And he seemed very interested to "make the price right". We'll see.

A few weeks ago my wife and I were looking for a new bike for her. I found a 2008 R1200R on Craigslist so I called the guy up and when I showed up to look at the bike it was at a place called "The Chop Shop" so I was a bit worried.
The bike looked OK on the surface and the owner of the shop let us take the bike for an afternoon test drive. When completed we asked about any damage and he revealed that yes, the bike had sustained some front end damage but he had replaced any damaged parts etc.
We were skeptical so we asked that he deliver the bike to the BMW dealer a block away for an inspection. He agreed to deliver the bike that day. When we showed up at the BMW dealership the next day the service manager stated empathically that we should not purchase the bike. It had bent front forks, warped front disk brake and it looked like it had gone end over end. The manager even refused to take any money from us. Kewl
Anyway, the point of the story is buyer beware and if you have doubts take it to your local dealer and have them check it out. The hundred bucks might save you a lot in the long run.
Good luck, I hope it goes well

I wish I hadn't sold my '97 11RT, but just bought a 2000RT . I loved the bike when I lived in So Cal. Good protection, but not too, too hot because the fairing doesn't catch and direct the engine heat at the rider. I've noticed a little of the famous "surging" in 2nd gear w both bikes and sort of said, "so what?" Drive a little faster, or a little slower, or upshift. It'll run just fine at that speed in 3rd and still have plenty of accelleration from there. There's also a couple threads in this forum about removing the cat code plug (The pink one in the fuse box under the seat) to get rid of the ''problem." A particularly thorough tune-up also seems to help. And there's the Techlusion thing that many guys like.
Mostly, I love the machine. It's fun to ride, fast, comfortable, great looking. There are some neat farkles, bolt-ons, bells and whistles to add to your particular tastes.
I don't think the $ is out of the ballpark. I got mine for less, but it was used at a dealership that had recently sold the business to someone else. I think they wanted it off the floor. But i got the benefit of their techs inspecting the machine, replacing fluids tires and a battery. You might bargain a bit if that's your style.
Good luck.

unfortunately the neat farkles are are slowly disappearing from vendors as the bikes age.
Like one company stopped making a great cargo rack for the 2000RT. Too old and not enough sales anymore.
Seems like they re all concentrating on the 12 GS, 1150's & 12 RT.
I wanted to get the switch outable side box hinge kit but the guy stopped making them.

OK. Still have not seen the bike but talked with the owner for quite a while.
71 year old guy, dirt bike experience that always wanted a BMW and its great engineering. Found this 1100rt at a dealer, paid $5000. for it and took it to Dave Campbell in San Diego for thorough check up and service update. Cam chain tensioner, replace shocks, fluid changes, battery, clutch cable, new seals, oil/filter changes and inspection. About 2000. He liked the ride but his son rides a Harley so he bought one of those as well, 08 Electra Glide Classic.
BMW now for sale at 5600 with 39k miles listed on his ad but actually 44k on the clock. He can't explain why son said 39K.
He says it will need a rear tire in about 2000 miles.
Plastic is clean with usual small nicks for its age. All in all it sounds pretty decent.
Thanks for all input.

Brad:
Don't worry about not having the sixth gear; there's a 1000 rpm split between it and 5th, so you can't really use it below 80 mph. And the power difference between the 1100 and the 1150 is negligible.
JMO, but the price is a bit high.

Definitely a nice sounding guy. I'll be calling him back to make appt to see. I spoke with Dave Campbell in San Diego. He says bike is OK, at least as good as he can remember. Maybe run it down to him and let a tech ride it for final approval?
On the surging issue...met a guy the other day that corrected his surge with a Champion single electrode spark plug. His thought was the multi electrode BMW plug (?) might be the culprit.
Thanks for the input. Stay tuned for updates!:)

I use Autolite 3923's. Copper. Big difference. There are other "fixes" out there but, what has been done in this regard to date? As I stated earlier I think the so called surge is overstated. When the game is on and you're gassin' it no problemo; it's an in town low speed concern.

Purchased my Opel Blue 01 1100RT about four years back with 9k miles. It now has 56K trouble free miles. It's been all over the country, the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, and three MOA rallies. On most long trips, I travel two up with filled luggage bags. The first thing I added was a Techlusion to eliminate all surging and add a little power. It's a fast, smooth, great looking bike that is easy to maintain. I highly commend it and have no intentions of selling mine.

When ever I hear those words I get very scared. Typically it is a ploy used by someone who knows their is something wrong and is uncomfortable lying about it so they get someone in their family or a friend to sell it who knows nothing about it. That way the person only has to say "I don't know". I have found people who seemed very honest using this ploy. I'd be very careful.

Valid point. I think I have overcome that. Spent 1 hour with dad on the phone. He sounds legit. Bought the BMW, took it to shop and spent a ton of money updating services etc. I spoke with the shop owner and he confirmed money spent was updating services, shocks, clutch cable and others, that the bike was a good one. From what he can remember he thought the bike was ok.
Dad explained the switch to Harley. But if we get down there and its not what it should be, I walk! There are plenty more where that one came from. Shoot, I may get a Harley instead! We'll know tomorrow.

I echo the inspection from a tech. Ask if you can learn as they inspect the bike...I found it very instructive. (my first BMW).

I've driven a 2003 K1200GT and that was very nice except for one flaw and that was the slight hesitation on acceleration. That issue was resolved in later model years. My 2006 K1200S doesn't have that problem and is zoom zoom fast.

Hi Brad:
We are happily settled in our RV park here in Casa Grande and I took some pictures along the way and will send them when I download them to the computer. Weather was 75 degrees today and we took a nice ride looking for the Casa Grande monument but unfortunately all we found was a Walmart where we purchased a couple of bike covers for the bikes at a good price.

Well,
The bike looked very nice. It needs detailing , update the service and 2 fresh tires. 9945miles.
Dealer quoted me 6500, which I assumed meant +tax. He showed me 6400 out the door on his computer. I lost my poker face and before I could say I'll take it, he said , "let me check on one thing". When he returned he upped the price by 1300 bucks.
So, no, I didn't buy it.
Odd sales tactic.

I have rode 1100s a few times and own a 1150,that being said it would be very hard to go back to a 5 speed.I would always be looking for 6th gear, makes such a big difference on long rides.
The end ratio of the 5sp and 6sp are the same. :thumb

Currently, 6500 offer in on 99 1100rt with 28K and all goodies. Very clean. Owner is mulling it over. Also saw 2001 with 10K and most goodies. Pretty nice, dropped once needs tires and some love. Owner ran bike on center stand, high speed idle on , and burned the plastic down low. Bubbled the plastic and peeled the paint in about 4" diameter area. Header pipes were very hot.
Gettin' close!:dance

Hey, it's just like love....sometimes the pursuit is more fun than the catch. :dance
Arizona rides have been great. Yesterday we drove up to Tortilla Flats for burgers, beer and twisties. The picture attached is when we drove through Nevada and drove over to the Hoover Dam. The new bridge in the background is a lovely backdrop.

Very nice. I was in the parking lot overlooking Hoover Dam mid October. That new bridge is spectacular!
The chase is nearing the end.
Great pic!

Zeroing in on a 2001 r1100rt, 10K miles, top box, no heated grips, abs, very clean except where he ran it on high idle on the center stand until the plastic melted and blistered/peeled the paint by the header pipes. Graphite gray, standard seat. Has a fresh battery, needs a rear tire. Balls in his court at $6K. Keep your fingers crossed. Oh, the windshield has delaminated. Does anyone know of a polish that will remove the peeling layer on a standard BMW windshield?
Tire suggestion for the rear? Fronts OK.:D:lurk

Sounds good. I'll just buy an after market (better) w/s or stock here. I've seen them bet 50-100 like new in the flea mkt.

+1 on the windshield replacement.
and i would use search function for tire recommendations. that question gets asked anew about once every 4 or 5 days, and the answers remain the same. no significantly new tires for RT application have been introduced in the last year (Roadsmarts and PR2s have enough time on them since their release that there are plenty of reviews for personal analysis).

I always thought the heated grips came on all rt's, maybe I'm wrong or all the ones I saw had them.
Just wondering........

Hi gang!
I'm headed out next Friday to pick up a '99 r1100rt to bring home. ABS, 31K miles, top box.
This looks like the winner of a long search. I saw and met some nice bikes and people along the way. Well worth the search.
Thanks again to everyone who weighed in on my request for opinions. Very helpful and much appreciated.
I'll post a picture after I get home.

I'm back!
Southwest flight to Phoenix. Met retired firefighter Mel from Denver area, he and wife are snowbirds, living in Apache Junction. Very nice man.
I drove home on Sunday, about 500 miles past Colorado River , Barstow, through 35mph winds, some rain, but arrived home safe and sound. Too much after the sun went down but the rt did a great job getting us there.
'99 r1100rt with 31,500 miles, ABS, systems luggage, top box, no heated grips(dang), Opal Blue, overall condition is excellent! My wife and I searched for scratches, dings, etc., few to none. Standard saddle. 37-44mpg depending on how hard the headwind was. Ran great. I loved the heat coming from the oil cooler out the fairing vents.
Good service records. I do need an owners manual, Mel did not have it.
So thats it. I'll add a pic asap.
Thanks again all who weighed in during the search. Very helpful, much appreciated.
Next I'll show it to the Harley guys at work so they can say,"Why didn't you get a real bike?"
Priceless.

Too bad you didn't have time to do the Apache Trail over to Tortilla Flats. It is a great ride and there's a BBQ joint that serves up great food at the end of the trail. Lots of twisties on the way there and great scenery to boot.

Just changed my spark plugs to Autolites 3923.
A definite difference in smoother engine operation, well worth the exchange.

Hopefully I have attached a picture of the new bike to this reply. Inquiring minds have been.......inquiring. So here it is, the fruit of a long search. Every minute of the search paid off with this particular one. Great condition, good care, informative, helpful former owners.
This bike started in Peoria Heights, Illinois, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Apache Junction, AZ and now Costa Mesa, CA. Well traveled, low miles.:dance:usa:type

I have just one question:
Did your wife make the trip with you?? If so she is a real trooper and keeper:hug
It did rain most of the weekend you made your trip - lucky you did not hit any snow in the higher elevations. Congrats on the new bike:dance

You are right about the trooper and keeper part. Just not the part about joining me for the ride. She was unable to attend the ride home but she is looking forward to a return to Phoenix for my sons tournament. And a ride to Colorado to see the other college kids. We'll be putting some miles on this baby!
I had her blessing all the way home and she was not disappointed with the end product.

Hi,
I'm back just over a year after hunting down and finding a very nice R1100Rt in Apache Creek, AZ.
Since then I've put 6500 miles on it with one long trip to Albequerque, NM for the balloon festival and some commuting back and forth to work.
One set of new tires, I picked the Continental Road Attacks.
I had one small issue where I may have been riding the rear back with my foot, caused the FD boot to catch fire. Only partially burned the boot. Matt replaced that, replaced the paralever earing, valve adjust and said throttle bodies were very well synched.
I am buying Russell Day long saddle from Bill in Georgia. He is shipping it out today. My ride to Albequerqe had me saddle squirmin'at about 80 miles. Fortunately we get off every 100 miles for break.
So I'm excited about the new saddle!
The RT is a great bike.
