Removed the tupperware for the first time for a new battery, but of course didn't pay enough att'n, and also took both sides and the belly pan for a good look and cleaning. It's a new-to-me 2000RT, and I'm mostly just having difficulty getting all the bolt holes to line up and the seams to snug up. I believe I know which bolts go where( long ones underneath and by footpeg), but it's always just a hair off. I can get three or four bolts in sort of hand-tight/loose, but then other holes don't line up at all.
Where should I start? What are the secrets learned from experience about getting it all back together?
thanx

I have an 2004 1150RT but, it's probably the same. the gas tank back lower right hand mounting bolt is slotted. Use it for adjustment. Once i found the correct position I punch marked the washer correct position so I can put it back the same every time. If you don't get it exactly the same the shark fins off the engine may need to shift also. Start the screws from the side fairing into the shark fins. Almost seat them but leave them a little loose. Then loosen the shark fin mounting bolts on the engine and they will find their correct position. Then tighten it all back up.

+1 on affixing them loosely first. On my 1998 R1100RT, I also like to start from the top & work down, getting at least one in forward & making sure all the plastic parts are fitting together. I also start with the middle one on any group of three (tank top, above the footpegs). It does go together without forcing.

thanx, you guys. i think I need to take it completely off, restart in the daylight when I'm not freezing my keister off and be sure every inch of the perimiter is settled where it ought to be. I've "always"...ok once i finally screwed up my Pichler for the umpteenth time, ...I've always used the "bolts-in-loosely-then-jiggle method," but this one's been a bee-OTCH to jiggle. Once I put in the first bolt and that upper rear-most ..."I-don't-know-what-you-call-it-not-exactly-a-bolt-just-under-the-rear-of-the-driver's-seat-bolt-like-expansion-attachment, there's no wiggle. I can kind of force most of the rest of the bolt holes to line up, but it don't seem right.

I find it helpful to put the two screws by the oil cooler in first and then the ones around the jugs. In working in an area (tank, footpegs) I leave them loose until all the screws are in.

Thats the way I do mine, works very well.

I thought you said you changed the battery.. I remove usually remove the gas tank to do that. The bolt I'm describing is a mounting bolt at the back lower right corner of the gas tank. My bolt is a, I guess, an 8mm to 10mm allen head. The frame mounting point is slotted. If the gas tank is not sitting correctly at that point nothing lines up like it use to.
