Does it seem reasonable for a fuel pump in an '03 R1150R with 24000 miles to have crapped out ?

I have a 2003 R1150R and it broke down on the road a week ago. I was stopped idling waiting for someone and the bike stalled and would not start. When I turned the key on the pump cycled on but made a high pitched sound. It turned out that the fuel filter was clogged. Changed the filter and the bike ran fine. So your problem could be the filter and not the pump.

Maybe, maybe not. They don't fail often but occasionally they do. On the other hand my R1150R has 125K and Voni's R1100RS has 350K and both pumps run fine.
I assume from the question that it doesn't come on when you turn the key and kill switch both to the"on" positions. I would first check that the electrical connection is clean and firmly connected - at frame on right side of the bike.
If it is or seems to be then electrical tests are needed to be sure power is getting there. If working correctly the power to the pump or ground for the pump will be for only a few seconds each time you flip the kill switch on,with the key on. (I forget whether the power is switched or the ground is switched by the motronic. Somebody else needs to chime in here.) If not there is either a wiring or motronic problem. You might then try unplugging and reconnecting the motronic.
If you seem to be getting what you should get to run the pump at the connector and it still fails to run then the pump is stuck. I think at that point it needs to come out of the tank.
Once out it might start and clear a clog by applying power with the polarity reversed. I have had good luck doing this with K bike pumps - never needed to with an Oilhead.
Good luck.
