My 2002 1150RT has some noise on start-up that lasts for a second or two. I think I remember something about this being related to the design of the cam chain tensioner piston. Will this shorten my engine life or is the noise simply a nuisance? Thanks for any input.

just a nuisance noise. happens because the older style CCT is oil pressurized, and the oil in it is not yet pressurized at start up.
replacement kit for the new & improved version (the only one you can buy right now) is about $25 or so, iirc. easy DIY job, if so inclined.

Dean,
I just did this mod to my '95 R11RSL, and it sure does quiet them down and is quite easy to do yourself.
I did quite a lot of research before deciding to do it, and the overwhelming concencus was that it does not hurt anything, just an annoying, un-BMW like sound, which was why I decided to do mine.

My 1996 RS1100RS made a 'Bad' noise for a second or two on start and I fixed it with the new 'Left Side Cam Chain Tensioner' strongly rescommended by many.
It worked like magic and I'm happy.

There were suggestions that continued operation with the flawed LSCCT might cause some severe trouble. I thought that this was fixed way before 2002.

What gives?

upgraded part was circa 2003, iirc.
there's a real good pictorial how-to over on pelicanparts.com (R1100S Tech forum- and you'd better use the search function!)

One positive benefit: if you had (or wanted) to sell the bike many potential buyers would be put off by that racket.

Lots of folks say this is just a nuisance, but there have been more than a few cases of broken cam chain rails on these bikes. I can't imagine that having the chain slapping that rail is good for it.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a good December or January project.

It is the updated part listed for the left side cam chain tensioner at the dealer.

After you change that part and lose it's noise, you start hearing the TB shaft tick-tick-tick on the left side as well:laugh Happened on two diff bikes!

from here- http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?kind=M&arch=0 you can search your specific year/model, and find any OEM part you need for your bike.

here's a good repair thread on it, pics included.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-r1100s-r1200s-tech-forum/267977-retrofitting-late-model-left-side-cam-chain-tensioner.html

these are the parts you need.
11317688629 - cylinder
11317656922 - piston
07119963308 - seal ring 18x22

that would run you $64.46 from Chicago BMW, plus s/h.
if you're thinking about doing it Jan/Feb, I'd go ahead and order the parts now.
