The left fork is showing some light oil around the top seal. Short of an overhaul, am I able to safely ignore it or just occasionally top it up to replace lost? The bike has 59000 miles and runs adequately.

It would take about an hour to replace the fork seal. Other than replacing the seal there is nothing to overhaul.

No you should replace it (and the opposit one) because it will probably leak more and more. The PO of my bike did the right one just before I bought it and six months later the left one went. Good news: its much easier to do than a conventional fork as there are no springs inside. There are how-to's in Advrider and other places. Its just a matter of removing the front wheel and the fork brace and unbolting the two sliders. Piece of cake!
