View Full Version : Valve adjust / are they coming thru the cover?

I had done a valve adjust on my 04 GSA when it was warmer and now that it has turned cold the right side when I start it sounds like the valves are going to come through the cover until it has warmed up.

If I have the advance (choke) all the way up it sounds normal but if I move it down one then the racket is there..

Any idea???

Probably rocker arm end float. Noise from rocker arm end float is very rpm sensitive. I puzzled over this a long time but finally figured out that at slower rpm the rocker arms have time to bang back and forth but at higher rpm they get pushed "up" and don't have time to move much before they are pushed up again.

The spec. for end play is very large. I find that they are very noisy even when in spec. if near the large end of the spec. I always put them near the minimum which quiets them down nicely.

Could it be the chain tensioner? You could always check the valve clearances. If you did it right they should be fine...

jdog- if you're thinking just the "old" chain tensioner issue, that is left side only, and it's noise goes away after about 5 seconds. not likely.

What he's describing sounds like the noise my 96 GS made when the CT went. You could hear it (a little) in summer. Then in winter it really kicked it.

Like Paul mentioned the up and down play contributes to the most noise coming out from under the valve covers.Your valve adjustment is probably right on the money.I set my up and down play to .0025" and it's nice and quite.

I recently adjusted my rocker arm end play on my RT after the valves starting getting noisy at operating temperatures. BMW provides a wide tolerance for end play; .05 - .40. The end play on my RT was at .35. Still within tolerance but on the high end. I adjusted the end play using the intake feeler gauges (.15) and it really quieted the motor down. Even at higher temperatures now, there is no more ticking sounds.

I now check the rocker arm end play while I'm checking the intake valves.

Thanks to all.. I will have to check out the rocker play as soon as time permits.

So am I going to hurt anything by ridding it like this?

I should be able to get to it this weekend.

It depends. IF it is just your endplay you are fine. IF you didn't tighten one of your valve adjust nuts and it fell off, you would not want to be riding it.

A missing nut ticks very loudly, warm or cold.

Jim,

that is good to know. Will file that in the "make sure my nuts are tight before putting the cover on."

However, the noise goes away when the rpms come up and after a short warm up.. It did not do it today as the temps were warmer. 52 degs.
I will look at it this weekend and see what more trouble I can cause.

If there is someone in the Dallas/Richardson/Garland TX area that has messed with doing their valves and would like to lend a hand I have beer.. :whistle

Definitely sounds like the endplay is at the outter end of the spectrum. It sounds harder to do than it is.

Thank you Jim for a great set of videos. I've been tuning my BMWs for years. However, it good to watch your videos to see how you go about the same tasks. So much of tuning is technique.

I don't have a new hexhead. However, my old buddy does. So, I bought that video as well to familiarize myself with the new models for whenever he needs a hand.

Thanks to all for the reply's.
I finally got to go back in and recheck and I had the right side too loose on the valves.
The gap between the (rocker) is any where from .007 to .011 on both sides.

It almost sounds like the noise that I am hearing could be the alternator belt but it is not a squeal and it did start after I adjusted the valves..
So going to check it out tomorrow and if it is tight then off to the shop it goes as it is going to be colder here and that is the only time that it does it when starting.

Thanks again to all for the ideas and help. :clap

Peace, Love and Turkey Grease.
