In the process of changing stock charging suystem to a Euroelectric. Following the excellent directions supplied with the new equipment i've reached a part where the stator will not come off. I don't want to start whacking the stuff out of it for fear that something will break. Looking for any suggestions on how to remove the original stator ( on for 28 yrs.) without using heat. Can't be trusted with matches.

Snowbum discusses some issues with removing the stator here:

Look for "Method #2" in red font about halfway down the page. When I removed mine, I used pieces of wood and carefully worked all the way around where I could get purchase on the housing. You might try some light taps with a rubber or dead blow hammer...that might help shock the attachments. IIRC, the stator fits over 3 arms on the base of the alternator, with an overlapping joing. It's just press fit into place and the screws (as I recall) are there to provide the final clamping force.

Even the bolt Northwoods sells for removing the rotor won't help him remove the stator. It is just a friction fit in there. A few light taps with a rubber mallet will lossen it and it will slip right off with a little tugging forward.

tried the wooden "drift" at the three screw points, with a few persuasive taps the stator started to move. Using the "drift" as a pry the stator came off. thanks to all for the quick and accurate answers. Luftkopfs rule.
