After I pulled the engine from my 1988 R100RT, I noticed that the fins/ridges on the right side of the engine timing set cover were scalloped, obviously from the factory given the black paint pattern:

Was this the standard pattern in the later airheads? Or is this a casting defect? (I doubt that its a defect -- it's too regular a pattern)
The bigger Q is: why is it there? clutch cable clearance?
Mostly just curious.
