Today I overfilled my 2009 GS with oil. I checked per instructions from dealer and the level was just below the bottom red line. I started pouring the oil and kept checking the level and apparently didn't give the oil enough time to get to the bottom. So now the level is above the top red line. I added about 80% of the. quart. My dealer is 100 miles away. Is this really bad for the engine? I rode about 80 miles today. I not much of a mechanic and have tried to find a manual pump to take out some of the oil. Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

From bottom to top of the sight glass is about 1/2 a quart. Next time you'll know. You've two choices... ride the bike, or drain the extra 1/3 qt you added. You can drain it from the drain plug if you feel the need. Since you just want to remove a little bit the bike can be cold. Back off the drain plug until almost off. Pull the plug until about 1/2 a quart is out then start screwing the plug back in. Drain into a clean container. Don't panic if you drain too much -- you can poor it some of it back into the bike.
Or just ride. For the approx 1/3 qt you over filled I'd likely just ride the bike.

why risk blowing seals by riding with too much oil when it is so easy to just drain some out?
you've got a brand new bike, be nice to it.

An alternative, that is less messy that the drain plug -- remove and drain the oil filter once or a few times, as needed.

1/3 of a quart will not harm your seals or motor! Ride the bike.

Thanks guys! So, the risk is the seals. It actually isn't. Try this:
Get a friend
Have him lean and hold the bike to the right side (away from the oil window) for a few moments
While you get down and watch the window.
If any air appears in the window (oil/air line) you're fine to go. The window is quite a ways down the sump on a hexhead, and 1/3-1/2 quart too much will have no effect at all, and your seals are not at risk. Worst case if you overfilled it would be some oil making it's way through the crankcase vent system - you'd know that was happening because you would have LOTS of smoke out of the exhaust.

Drain IT again! Into a clean pan, so the oil can go back in, with less this time:). SOOOOO simple, its scary! Randy

If you overfilled a third of a quart and were still in your garage, I'd say drain a third of a quart. It would take two minutes. If you've already ridden it 80 miles, forget about. Any damage (none) is already done.
