No, not that kind of fetish, unless you consider an unusual attraction to anything on two wheels a fetish...

I admit it to all; I have a fetish! A riding fetish that my wife picked up for me in a little store on the Boulder pearl street mall in some little transcendental enlightenment shop. It's a little stone carved rattlesnake made out of pipestone from Pipestone MN. I keep it in my man cave on a shelf with honors.

And as much as I tend to not believe in much today other than my self and my family each and every morning, as with this morning, before I open the garage door to head down the road on my motorcycle, I touch my finger to my lips, then down on the head of my little fetish for luck.

The symbolism of the snake, for those who have not had to live in areas where you come into surprise contact with the Crotalus horridus, you have to understand this point; each time you step out of your door, you risk the bite of the rattler.

So the symbol of giving a "kiss” to the snake is this: Each morning before I ride, or before I go on any two wheeled trip, I make peace with the rattler i.e. death. I recognize acknowledge that death could be waiting for me right outside that door. By doing so, a part of my brain is put on stand by; part of my brain is nudged by that kiss, to take care., take caution for death waits for those who heed not caution.

I know, it all sound a little nuts, but for this morning anyway, riding off into as solid bank of fog with about 30 ft max visibility, I knew exactly why I touched the fetish!

Is anybody out there has some other good luck thing going down there before each ride, or am I the only one?

I often have the feeling that I need to 'reflect' before I pull out of the garage.
I remember on this last 8k+ ride that I spoke to my "spirit" that if she got me thru this snow blizzard, I would lead a better life.
And, I'm here to state, she got me through it. And...........I take an 81 mg aspirin every day too.:deal:bow

I think I need a new one. I used to do a walk around (check the oil, tires, lights, etc) but I crashed on my last ride. Divine intervention helped there.

I will still do the walk around but maybe a little prayer will help too.

No ritual with this one, but I found biker guardian angel pins (angel riding on a cruiser) in a gift shop close to where I used to live in Maine. I removed the stem and superglued it to the handlebar pad on the K-bike. I feel better having it there.

Or, if you must do stupid, at least wait until your body metabolizes all the stupid before you get on the bike.

Hey all; Is a fetish like a ritual? In that case, I guess I have a fetish. I do my normal pre-ride inspection, and then, while the bike is warming up, before I put on my gear, I kneel and ask the Lord to look over me while I am riding. It works pretty well, haven't hit anything in over six years now. Via con Dios, Dutch

What spurious irreverent, neurotic, regimented ridiculously and seemingly innocuous act do you attribute to charging you with good luck before your ride?

What do you do?

Or are you not a "Believer of Luck"?

I guess I never developed any superstitions on the bike, although I have found myself walking past it in the garage and giving it a pat on the seat from time to time. I don't know what that says about me.

When I flew more often and would give someone an airplane ride, I never allowed them to take any pictures of themselves in front of the plane or in it, or any of that kind of stuff before the flight. I always felt like that was bad juju. Afterwards they could shoot all they wanted.

I don't know if I believe in good luck:dunno

I'm not sure I buy into "luck"... I make my own luck. :thumb

I'm with you! To a point. Then, I think about all those crazies out there. I figure, despite what we may think at times, they really don't want to kill the nice biker today. So, I wish them luck..... May their drive be without incident, amen.

I'm not really into luck, but do believe in centering myself before starting a ride. Maybe that's why I named my GS after Glenfiddich, a wonderfully agile and athletic golden retriever I lost a few years ago to cancer.

I talk to my bike the same way I talked to that dog. Neurotic? Maybe, but it helps get my mind into the ride.

Hi Red, in New Mexico, where I lived for many years, houses may have blue doors to ward off witches. A lizard, ceramic or metal, is oft times found buried in the adobe or hard plaster near the entry door. It represents good luck. Me? I have never yet carried a fetish, even a rabbits foot. I lived in Boulder Colorado, and still pass through on occasion, maybe on one of those pass throughs I'll try and find that Pearl Street shop and look for a snake fetish!
