Not to beat it to death... have a an older k bike...looking at a 2005 r1200rt... should I be concerned about the final drive issue or is it over-blown.

Overblown and if you service it and don't overfill it no worries mate.
Keep an eye on it for small leaks and get the seal replaced if necessary.
Also, the ignition ring on 05 and 06 models seem to be bulletproof unlike later models.

Love my RT with all the implied nonsense.
Stuff breaks you fix it or get it fixed.

My 2005 RT has just over 40k miles and I love it. I might want an 06 or 07 because I fear the cost of the brake booster pump, but then I must admit, I really love the power brakes, too. You can brake fully with one finger. I don't know how much different in price an 05 is from, say, an 07, but maybe there's not that much? Awesome bike, though.

No problems with mine. I don't even suffer much from the dreaded stock seat. I love the brakes, too. Except for my R69S, this bike is the best I've had.

Well said, Jon. "The best I've ever had" (for sport touring, not track!).

I have a 2005 R1200RT and it has been a terrific bike. At 16,000 miles, all I have done is replace tires (twice), the battery once and perform normal service intervals. Unlike others, I happen to like both the the power brake configuration and the looks of the bike.

My only complaint is that they didn't have the lower frame option available when I purchased mine in July 2005. I have a 28 inch inseam and even with the low seat, I am on my tiptoes, when stopped. I am very, very careful of my footing when backing into/out of parking spaces.

I would say don't worry about the final drive. Ride the bike. You will fall in love with it.

I traded a 2007 R for the 05RT and it had a leaky clutch slave and fixed that and then still leaked so I had a few seals inside the engine that were still leaking, cost me about 1500.oo to have that $23 worth of seals fixed ,so All i can say is Look under it and make sure there is no oil residue around were the exhaust is .other than that my bike is Very Lovable.;);)

Definately overblown...
My 05 Rt has nearly 50K, no problems...

30K on ours and no problems.

I ride it like a squid, either alone or two up.

Ohlins really make this bike into the two wheeled M5 it can be.

I've 48K+ on my 2005 RT (I bought it new). I've made every scheduled maintaince and never had a bit of trouble with the final drive.

I just had the 48K maintenance done the other day and as I mentioned in another thread - when I picked it up from servicing, the brake servos were not fully releasing when I released the brake lever. The dealer is going to take another look at it.

Other than that little hic-up, I've never had any issues.

I bought a used '05 RT with 27,000 miles on it in May '09. It was very well maintained, and had receipts to back it up. Put on a new set of Michelin PR2's, and it now has 35,000 miles on it. It has been a great bike no problems to speak of. Except figuring out how to wipe that smile off my face when I'm done riding.
