When I read this article (http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2009-09-24-women-submarines_N.htm) this morning my first impression was, "how cute".

Interesting article. If you'll notice neither the Chairman of the JCS (Adm Mullen) or the CNO (Adm Roughead) are qualified in submarines. Both have SWO pins (surface warriors). I served aboard two boats (temporarily) and actually had a rack on one. On the other I slept between two torpedoes and below another on a "skid rack". (Zero privacy). Though it goes against PC, I personally don't believe females should be on subs or in combat! If the armed forces can't fill the need for combatant bodies with male personnel, then there is a real problem with recruiting and retention, probably.
Bet this one stirs up some controversy!

I couldn't agree with you more.
I can't help but think that anybody who is volunteering to serve deserves the utmost respect, our admiration and adoration. Whether or not women will serve on Subs is an interesting question but in my mind the true story is the number of fine men and women who are out there putting it on the line everyday.

I was aboard two different Sub Tenders during my service time. USS Holland (AS32) and USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS16). I've spent many a hour in the Bowels of Fast Attack and Boomer Subs.....
