Rock - it would be immensely helpful in trying to answer your question if we knew what year/model hexhead you owned. There are different models, and the temperature sensor (I assume you mean for ambient air temp) is located in different spots.

Lots of people add this info to their "SIG" - making it always available for anyone who needs to know.

Profile requires the knowledgeable - who know to look there - to open it and then look it up. Putting it in your sig makes it instantly available.

I'd suggest reading the DIY on removing the R1200RT tupperware - I believe the temperature sensor is shown there. My WAG is the sensor is out of place and somewhere hotter than the ambient air is.

I have an '05 also. The sensor was moved from the original location to the left front faring as part of a factory recall on the early models. Mine has never been very accurate. Before or after the recall fix. I think they get the sensors from the same vendor that supplies speedometers and oil level sensors.:rofl

I don't believe the inaccuracy is a sensor problem. This AM when I rode in - mine indicated 39F when I left the garage - that agreed with the weather-guesser, and the indoor/outdoor thermometer I have in my bedroom. It generally agrees within a degree or so to the big outdoor sign thermometers. It's been accurate for 32k miles so far.

Difference is - it's pretty much in the open on an R1200R. I think any shielding of the probe on it like is done on an RT will lead it to giving high readings. Can't comment on the oil-level sensor, they left that out of the R12R, and the speedo's - well - that's just BMW's way of trying to save you getting tickets (the odometers are quite accurate..)

Rock - I imagine studying the DIY on taking the plastic apart will lead you to where the sensor belongs - then it's just a matter of finding it and putting it back where it belongs, or asking the dealer to since it seems obvious they didn't when they last serviced the bike.

My 2007 R1200rt has the sensor located throttle side near the front of the fairing. I have reinstalled the faring and forgot to properly replace the sensor, it's easy to do. It just clips to a piece of plastic. I would guess that is your problem.

I have a 2005 RT and the sensor has been relocated to the front fairing throttle side, but it is still inaccurate. It reads 10 degrees low. Not a big deal since I don't use it much anyway, but it's a little annoying to get the freeze warnings when temps are in the low 40s.

The socket for the sensor has a built-in jumper that completes the circuit when the sensor is properly installed. That's why there is no reading if the service tech forgets to put it back. Happened to me, too.
