View Full Version : Couple of questions about my RT

First I would like to say Hi to everyone, just got my 08 RT last weekend and am trying to learn all about it. So with that in mind, I have a couple of questions regarding it.

First, I only received the one "good" key when I picked it up. There was a plastic key that looks like it is an emergency key that came with it also. Should there have been more than one key with it? I have talked to others and some say they just got the one good key and others say they received two with theirs. If I have to buy another I will, but it doesn't look like a cheap key either.

Second, I received the owners manual with it, but there was no radio manual. I noticed when I select the aux. setting via the handlebar control, there is an intercom indicator that comes up on the display. I was curious how you would use this and what you would need to make it work. Would it be tied into the aux. connector in the CD compartment? My little mind can't grasp how this would all work.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated and I am trying to learn all I can about this great bike. Thanks!

Ron

When I purchased my RT last year, IIRC the rule was you could get one replacement "regular" key for free, but you needed to ask the dealer to order it. That was a year and a half ago, so that policy could have changed.

Before I purchased, when I was doing research on what to expect from the dealer, some dealers would just automatically order it and some you had to specifically ask.

Hey Ron,
First, congrats. I hope your RT brings you as much joy as has mine.
Now the key thing. You got what you get. You can order another through your dealer as was mentioned. These are not your run of the mill keys so don't go cheap now (I mean, look at the invoice for your RT, come on!) and try to go to hardware store, no!

And that plastic key? Scurry it away in a safe place. As you said, emergency only. Not something you tuck into your wallet.

I cannot answer your radio/aux/intercom question as I did not opt for that and honestly I have not paid attention to previous threads/posts on the subject. The Search function in the beige bar across top of screen has been helpful to me in past, sometimes saving me asking redundant questions.

Enjoy and ride safely!

New? or Used? Dealer? or Other?

I am not familiar with the radio on that bike. But I had a K1100LT with a radio - with the anti-theft feature that if power to the radio was disconnected it could only be reactivated with a 4 digit code. That code was in the radio manual.

I would inquire and if a code is required, get the code before the battery dies, or is removed for any reason. Otherwise - bye bye tunes.

About three weeks ago I simply asked my dealer for a second metal key for my '08 RT. A few days later I received it, free, end of story. Somewhat odd, I'd say, but now I have a good spare key.

If the bike was used, you can e confident that that's all the keys Herb got whiththe bike. I bought a new '09 and got two regular keys plus the plastic emergency one.

I checked it to be sure it worked, had my bank make me an emergency ATM card spare (they'll do it while you wait), and zip tied both on my bike on highly top-secret area so I shouldn't ever be stranded unless I pull a really bonehead move! Of course, I still have to remember that I have them at all and where I put them.

As you mature (get older) you will find more and more occasions where you have hidden necessary items from yourself. Then later, when you find them by accident, you say to yourself or your spouse, or anybody else listening, "Well, I'll be. I wonder how that got there?"

Ron,

This has come up before, but that plastic key is referred to as a "Wallet key".
Yes it's intended for emergencies or an "Emergency key", but it's made flat enough to stash in your wallet.

It can come in handy when your key is in the hotel room four floors up and you decide you want to get something or move your bike when standing outside in the parking lot.

Hopefully you'll never lose your main key.

Thanks for all the good answers and I will see what the dealer tells me tomorrow. Hi Larry, good to see another SE Missourian on here. Yes, I am confident too that if Herb would have had any more keys, he would have given them to me. Both Herb and Reno are super people and I really feel good going into their dealership. In fact, I am going there in the morning to pick up a new top case I ordered for it and then I will check on the key. Even if I have to buy one that will be OK as I need to have a spare other than the plastic one which will remain in the safe till I need it. I might have to look into tying it to the bike somewhere though, just in case and as I get older, the just in cases get more frequent.:)

I will ask Herb too about the radio manual and see if there is a code for it. I had the battery disconnected for about 10 minutes while I cleaned the cables and put the battery tender pigtail on it, but it never asked for a code when I turned it back on, so maybe it doesn't have this feature OR I was just lucky.:) I did buy the bike used, but the dealer was really great and I even got to know the former owner before I bought the bike. I will give him a call and see if he might have the manual and maybe even an extra key.

Thanks again!
Ron

Congrats on your new bike. I have an 08 RT and love it.
I got two keys, two alarm fobs, and the plastic key.

You can get the manuals (download) from the Danish site

http://www.bmw-motorrad.dk/dk/da/index.html

then click on

then click on
Downloade manualer

then scroll through and find the R1200RT 2008 and it is there in English as well as Danish.

You can get both the Regular Manual for the bike and the Radio manual.

Have fun! :clap

Hey thanks a lot, this was just what I was looking for! I downloaded the radio manual and it has a lot of features I didn't realize it would do. I thought the intercom feature was actually something you could use for this purpose, but it is just to mute the audio so that an after market intercom can be used. I think.:) I will read it again, but was wondering why you just couldn't use the mute button in that case. Oh well, I just scanned through it and will look at it more closely after I print it off.

I too am loving the bike, I just haven't had the time to ride all I would like. Between working, cold and wet weather, and helping others on the weekend, the stars haven't been aligned correctly to let me get a good ride in. Of course I am enjoying sitting out in the garage tinkering with it in the mean time, so I guess that is the next best thing.

Thanks again for the info.....

Ride Safe,
Ron

I find it interesting that some got two keys and some only one. I talked to the former owner last week and he told me he only recieved one good key and the plastic key when he picked up the bike new. Regardless, I did get another key from the dealer, so I have two good keys now. If I cold only figure out what I did with the other one now......:) :bolt
