Hello can anyone out there provide me with some help? I have an 1989 r100gs and I need some heated grips, BMW does not offer any for this year bike. I do not feel like I want to replace the whole handlebar set up to use the grips that BMW use. I do not like the idea of heated gloves because of the cable I don't want to restrict my movement. So does anybody have any ideas for me ??

The cable really doesn't impede my movements. My '93 has the heated grips, but I find I still need the gloves. YMMV

How certain are you about your belief that BMW doesn't offer grips for your bike? Doesn't seem likely that they wouldn't. Check with Bob's BMW to make sure.

Try Motobins. I ordered a set from them just last year.

If you don't mind playing a bit try Joergs site http://jhau.maliwi.de/mot/ about his DIY grips. Bill

If I was to use the BMW grips I would need a new set of handlebars because mine do not have the hole drilled in the bottom to allow the cables through. I do not want to purchase a new set of handlebars at this time. I will check bobs bmw and motobins. Thanks for your help.

I am currently using a set of these Click Here (http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CST&Product_Code=16011&Category_Code=heated_grips). I really like them, they are warmer than my OEM BMW grips. They are easy to install and are not very expensive.

Why don't you just drill the hole?

I fitted these with the OEM 3 position switch. They provide plenty of heat and are well protected inside the bar. One anomaly though - they interfere with my radar dector

rmarkr, do you have a link / source for said heated plugs?
How long does it take to feel the heat from them?

I installed a set of heated grips with kit from Dual Star in Calif. They cost $35 I think and if you want the better switch, a few bucks more. Do a Google search for the company and you can find the grips on their website. I did however modify the installation instructions and ran the wires inside the bars and out the drilled hole. (you can drill yours easily) They have 2 heat levels and really work well. After attaching the heat grids to the metal on the throttle and left bar and stringing the wire unside the bar, you can slide the standard grips back on with air blown in the bar end and the throttle pipe. They come off with air and can be used again.

I've had heated grips on two K models and rarely used them. They made my hands perspire, which led to a constant cycle of on/off on/off.
My preference is for the Gerbing's products with the matching gloves, managed by a controller that allows dialing in as much or as little heat as needed.
Controller: http://gerbing.com/Products/tempControls.html
Gloves: http://gerbing.com/Products/gloves.html
The cable for the gloves does not restrict movement because it hooks up at the sleeve of the jacket or jacket liner.
Another thought I have on this is the simplicity of the hookup. Just connect the pos/neg at the battery or at a fuse panel and you are good to go, as opposed to the disassembly required to install the grips. The same hookup you use for your battery tender can be used for the other stuff.
I guess I did not answer the question you asked. Sorry ... sometimes I'm random. Especially early in the day...

Here's the address. If you don't get it, just search the web for dual star heated grip kit
