Eddie -
I've seen discussions of points on several forums where the rubbing block was not of the right dimension...even from the dealer. I'd check with Ted Porter at the Beemershop (http://www.beemershop.com). He's well aware of the situation and most likely has an alternate supplier for points.

You have points on a /7? Or points in a can?

Eddie: I think you have to enlarge the mounting slot. Don't ask me why they come with the slot too short but I've had it happen.

My experience is that the slot is fine but the points gap is not set correctly. The points gap does not need to be that precise. Sure, it says 0.016" but it can be a range of settings bigger or smaller than that and still work just fine. And it takes only a small amount of points gap adjustment to make a big difference when the points open.

Interesting... (insert image of flashbulb going off over the head)........... I ended up enlarging the slot on my /6 points, as well.... was "stuck" on the points gap being so important.
Guess that comes from the days of cars with 8 cylinders, so each rotation of the distributor had 8 "gaps", and the dwell was critical. These bikes don't have dwell in the original sense, so the time that they are closed is absolutely unimportant. And the time of opening is IT.
Thanks for the enlightenment! :bow

I installed a set of points on my '78 recently and they were fine. The rubbing block on some Chinese manufactured points was too high. Your dealer or supplier should be aware of this and sell you correct points. There was a previous thread regarding the faulty points.

The ones coming now from parts that say Made in Germany are ok.

Those are probably the points that were outsourced to China. I've seen where folks just file down the block to the correct dimension. The block was too long to ever get the points set right.

The good German NORIS points are available from Beemershop in CA and Hucky in FL. Both great Airhead sources.

I do not know who your dealer is; but re-selling those points will only create another headache for them and would be unethical. When did you purchase the points? Dealers have known of this for sometime. You may wish to find another dealer. Of course, could be an honest mistake on the dealer's part.
