Quck question in case anyone has come across this. I went looking for needles for my 40mm Bings and two shops showed me a newer needle design with 90 degree alternating slots rather than a circular groove, and a very delicate rectangular wire clip and star washer, rather than the old circlip.

I'm guessing these are for a different carb altogether, maybe from an oilhead or something; both shops said these are the correct needles (through their part numbers). The clips are longer than the bore it needs to drop down into on the slide, so it pretty definitely won't work.

Just wondered if someone here has seen these needles and knows what the story is...

AFAIK, there were at least two different styles of needles and retention systems. I don't believe they're interchangeable...it would require changing the slide. My general recollection is that the style where you grab the needle and push/pull while turning 90 degrees to move the needle is associated with the earlier carbs while the star washer, etc., is associated with the later carbs. I would have thought that your R100R carbs would be the later type.

I think it would depend on where the bike is from.
The US R100R had 32mm Bings the Euro bikes had the 40mm Bings.
If it is a US bike the 40mm Bings coluld be a used set from any year.

My bike came with the 32's; it's a U.S. bike. Picked up the 40's recently, and I had the impression they were later but not sure. In any case the slides clearly take the needles with round grooves and a little circlip. I had just never seen this other needle retention system with thin rectangular wire clip and star washer.

Anyone needs that kind let me know I've got them:)

Every 40mm Bing I've seen has the traditional (for Bing) 90 degree grooves and captured clip. The only Bings I've seen with circlips were 32mm on monolever R80s and R100s. This type of carb has an 8mm set screw to retain the needle at the top of the slide. Do your carbs have this set screw? If not, I would guess that someone has installed needles from 32mm carbs.

A bit of searching reveals that European R100s from '85 on use the circlip style needle. Try this part number: 13111337692

Thanks all for the info. I do have the big setscrew; these must be the euro carbs. Will try that part number - greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry-I clicked too soon. The 13111337692 is for 32mm carbs. 13111338522 should be the correct number.
