I'm wondering if the stock electrics on my 1983 R80RT will handle the addition of heated handgrips and a set of driving lights. I haven't looked at any in particular, just wondering if it can be done. with winter coming on , the thought of warm hands on long rides is tantilizing.

I run a Gerbing heated jacket and BMW heated grips without difficulty on my R65. The jacket is 77 watts and the grips are 22. If your total load is less than that (say using some HID driving lights at 35 watts apiece) and some Kimpex grip wraps, you should be fine IMO.

Keep in mind your Airhead doesn't make full charging power at low RPM's. Use the accessories on the road and keep the rev's up. If you're stuck idling around town, turn one or both off. There's always the option of the larger alternator from Rick Jones at Motorad Elektric.
