Are there any Rider's Edge instructors here? I know, I know, it's a HD thing.

I am already a MSF Ridercoach, and am looking for information about the Rider's Edge Instructor Training Program. What I have been able to google up is that it is a 5 day course, where you learn about the "Rider's Edge program additions"? What are these "additions" and what do you think about them? Also, the RE course gives 30 minutes to each exercise, how well does that work?

Thanks,

Scott

I don't know about the specific additions for instructors -- I was a Rider's Edge student 4 or 5 years ago. The Rider's Edge course I attended included some time visiting the showroom for an introduction to the bike models, accessories, and gear. We also visited the parts counter and service department at the dealer where the class was held. Other than that, I don't recall any other Harley-specific instructions during the actual riding part of the course.

One thing thing I questioned about my Rider's Edge class was the emergency braking exercise -- I felt it was introduced too soon -- before some of the students were comfortable with the controls. We were riding the Buell Blast -- it has a very capable front disk brake that will lock up -- and a couple of students performed full-body plants after locking up the front brake during the emergency braking exercise. Another student lost control while transitioning between acceleration and braking on the same exercise. I tend to think the Buell Blast is a bit more bike than a beginner should be riding his or her first time -- but I'm not an MSF/Rider's Edge coach. The rest of the exercises went okay with no other mishaps.

The pace was too fast for some and just right for others. I had previous experience, so I was okay. Some of the other students had never ridden before and they struggled throughout the two-day class.

I used to be on the board that oversees training in my state. We reviewed the Riders Edge program for potential inclusion in the licensing waiver process, in conjunction with our DOJ.

The Riders Edge simply is a branded version of the MSF material. The additions include product orientation and introduction to the HD stuff. Part of the experience of taking a rider course is the products exposure, so HD decided to introduce the Blast (RIP) for the courses as well as branding the videos and training material.

The dealerships are responsible for it. Check with your local HD shop to learn more about it.

Just what I was looking for, thanks for the input.
