View Full Version : When you lose your "Best Friend"
Sad news:
As some of you know, we are in the middle of packing up and moving from our beloved Beemer Hill. Late yesterday afternoon, Brian was moving "Old Resentful" up into the storage building, where it will stay until we move into a new house.
Seconds after he started riding up the hill to the building, Schutzen, our 9-year old German Shepherd, darted in front of the bike in an attempt to race him to the to door. He did not see her until he hit her.
The bike fell over on her, and broke her back. An hour later, the vet gave us the bad news that she was paralyzed. We made the sad decision to euthanize her. And now she is buried on Beemer Hill near our first dog, Fritz.
Below is a great photo taken by our friend Boxergrllie.

Those of us who have and love pets know how much this hurts. It had to happen in the middle of a move too, just more to deal with. I know you will miss her but every dog I've ever had and lost I've found again in another pet. They just keep coming back to us. I really believe that...

So Sorry for your loss. Losing a "fuzzy" child is never easy either. May you always remember the joys and sometimes? frustrations that was brought in your lives by him.

So sorry for this tragedy. I've been a dog owner and have had several of them that I'd call my best friend for all of my 50 years on this earth.
My condolences to you and Brian.
Thank you to everyone for your very kind thoughts. As you might imagine, this has been devastating for Brian. He and Schutzen have been inseparable since she came into our lives.
A coworker said that his favorite prayer is: “God, please make me the person my dog thinks I am.”
I like that.

Being a dog breeder for over 25 years we have had this type of loss many times. It is never easy. I hope this little poem will help a bit with your loss.
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Losing a pet is never easy. They give us love and affection when we are happy, sick, or sad and seem to know when we need it the most.

It's been 7 months since I had put my beloved chihuahua to sleep. She was like a child to me. As I sit and type this she would have been under my shirt (it's chilly here today). You have my sympathy.

There's a stone I had made for Luke at the top of the hill road, where the pasture opens wide and the setting sun highlights the words carved into its face. "That'll do, Luke, that'll do." The words are said to working dogs all over the world when the chores are done and the flock is settled: "That'll do dog, come home now, your work is done." Luke's work is done too. He took my heart and ran with it, and he's running still, fast and strong, a piece of my heart bound up with his, forever.

Sue and Brian,
This is so sad to hear. Having to make this kind of decision about a loved pet is so difficult. Losing a good buddy is hard. Time heals the sadness...but good memories are ever present.
You two take care.

Dogs are in our lives for such a short period of time, even under the best of circumstances. They truly bless us with their presence and show such great affection to their human companions. You were fortunate to have such a great canine companion.

So sorry for your loss.
As I read your thread my Shepherd walked up licked my hand then sat and looked at me. It was if he knew that I felt so bad for you and he wanted to be there for me.
I am thankful for the time I have with our K9 friends.

Brian and Sue
In 1979 I got a golden retriever from a lady giving away puppies in the grocery store parking lot. Milo shared almost everything with me until 1992, and passed on tragically after 13 glorious years. He was my best bud, and when I married, he went along everywhere we went, backpacking, hiking and even to a rock concert or two.
If you look at my avatar, you will see our latest. A little Goldy who now is over a year old. His name is, and he is The Milo.
He came back to us, man...
Your best friend just left awhile, and he will return...

You both have my sympathy. It was a freak accident and you had to do what is best for your best friend. It is very tough to let go of a pet, especially a canine.
I have a yellow Labrador named Birdee. She has a disposition like Marley from the movie. In fact she chewed up the 27th pair of my slipper's while I was out on a medical call. She has seperation disorder and that is her way of telling me that she is mad.
Other than that she is a great friend. My heart goes out to you and Brian.

Sue & Brian,
I just read the sad news... I'm so sorry to hear about Schutzen. I've got a dog (although we like to think of him as more like a son!) I can't imagine the hurt. I hope you two are kind to yourselves and take care of each other in such a difficult time.
My thoughts are with you two (and Schutzen!) in such a tough time...
Love,
Sarah
Our "fuzzy son" of 17 years passed a couple weeks ago. He left in his sleep, lying in the sun, on his grass, in his yard. Couldn't have asked for a better end for him.
But I still find myself walking in the yard several times a day to check on him, make sure he has fresh water, is doing OK...
So there are many of us out here that know what a loss you're feeling...
