My friends final drive has issues. Think he should take it to a shop?

Once you put the fire out - you can refill the drive.
Should be good to go after that!!
Can you add some more details - this should be a good story

One might question why that was posted as a "friends" final drive.. but it appears Bob no longer owns a BMW.. perhaps the friend was himself?

Busted!
OK, it's not my friends final drive. A buddy of mine who is with the local Beemer club that I have been a member of for some years sent that pic out to a number of us in an email. I thought it would be fun to post it here.
It was great to follow the link Marchyman gave us to read the whole story.
I did own a 2002 GS Adventure that I rode for 5 years and almost 70K miles. Never had a problem with my own final drive. But I know 9 people personally who have had FD failures.
Rode Beemers for over 25 years and wanted a smaller bike and sold my GS and was going to buy a 650 Beemer single just when they quit making them! So was reading about the Twin 650 BMW would have in a year or so and bought the Versys 650 Kawasaki thinking I would sell/trade it when the Twins were out. In the meantime the economic downturn happened and my income dropped a lot!:banghead
The Versys is paid for and I have fallen in love with it too:love
So I probably will have it for a while yet but I am planning on a future BMW!:thumb

Alongside my '07GSA1200 sits a newer '08KLR650 and its a hoot to ride. I've fixed it with Jesse bags, just like my GSA and they both go anywhere. Of course one was 15000$ cheaper:). You wouldn't know it, riding it:). I personally think I love my GSA, BUT the KLR has some distinct advantages, like easy to fix and a better dirt bike. Both go dirt. Randy:thumb FD on fire, thats a good pic!

The revised BMW Owners Manual specifically cautions you against "riding thru grass fires, flame throwers, volcanic lava flows or any areas where the FD might be exposed to extreme heat and result in this problem."
Furthermore, they categorically deny any problems with the FD and refuse to take any phone calls from anyone with the last name of 'Little.' :banghead

Heat resistant duct tape-----it fixes anything.
