I just bought a 1977 R100/7 that was repainted in a silver, very close to BMW silver. The paint job is good but they did a horrible stripe job with black automotive striping tape. I want to hand striped it as correctly as possible.
Can anyone tell me what colors BMW striped their silver R100/7's, the width of the stripe and the spacing between stripes? The pictures I find look like a double stripe on the tank like an R80RT but I cannot tell if the fenders are the same double striping or different. Also, how does the striping go on the bottom of the back fender - to stripe it fully around it would run into the screws from the back reflector. Also, is there supposed to be striping on the side panels and were there
any decals on the side panels or elsewhere on the bike? I appreciate any info anyone can give me as I can't find pictues that show enough detail to know. Thanks!

Phil Hawksley's site, which usually has plenty of pictures, doesn't have them right now...strange.

My '78 R100/7 (in blue metallic) has the following:

tank -- fat stripe on the outside, thin striped on the inside
front fender -- one stripe all the way around nestled up against the raised edge but has a gap where the accordion boot is
rear fender -- rear fender, same as front but the stripe doesn't go around the back where the license plate goes
side covers -- no stripe and with 1000cc decal

The tank stripes are roughly these measurements:

fat -- 4mm
thin -- 1.75mm
distance between -- 3mm

The stripes around the fenders are about 2.25mm wide.

Since the original striping was hand painted, they'll vary around the tank.

I'm a proud owner of an original R100/7 since new and BMW did not paint one silver that year. They DID however paint a "silver RS model" that year:). It had medium blue stripes:). All hand painted back then. Only one mfg'r today still does this and its HD! Good luck. Randy:thumb

I forgot about this site:

http://www.omnilex.com/public/bmw78/

These are scans of brochures from 1978...colors may not necessarily apply, but it should show the tanks. One of the brochure shows the silver with blue pinstripes.

Snowbum lists paint codes by model year here:

Of course you know that to do it right, you have to have it done by a cute little German lady. When it was done originally, the factory only employed women to do all the pin stripping by hand. They apprently have better eye to hand coordination. Or so I have been led to believe by the women in my life. :kiss

Just remember that mostly the USA is the only place that had "yearly" colors for particular models. In Germany, for example, you could get any model in any color. That is, if they had silver paint going that year, you could get any model in silver.
