View Full Version : 4 hours and Endurlast

It was going to rain, so I just spend 4 hours installing my Endurlast I purchased a month ago. I have not really worked on anything much since I did the heads on my 55 Buick 25 years ago. I found the directions they send good for the install. Only real issue is the Regulator, it will not fit the way they show. I going to make a bracket some way to install it better, right now just one bolt. I don't plan on driving till I come up with a better way. (Where did you install yours).
I also don't like the fact that the wires were not long enough to go around the battery better. I have not installed the toolbox back yet as I letting the battery tender bring it up to full charge before I start 'Vera'. But I think the wires can are so short they run over the top of the battery. I going to reevaluate the location of the regulator, I think there must be a better place then their location.
I figures for $500 they could give you more wire. The bracket that was to hold the lower screw of the regulator had to be drilled out to take the bolt that is in the kit. I guess that is mute as it does not fit there.
If I get the claimed wattage I will be happy. Would I do it again? Hope to never find out.
Now I just have to become a carburetor guy and get then working well.

I mounted the regulator as shown in the attached picture.

Can you get the side covers back on with your wires running that way.

I mounted mine near where 35303 did, just rotated 90 degrees. I have the R/R running lengthwise as opposed to across. I used one of the supplied mounts to attach the forward mounting hole to the forward frame member and fabricated from metal strapping and some rubber a clamp to the rear frame member. When installed, the R/R sits in the "Y" created by the frame, nicely under the side cover. I found the supplied leads long enough, even with the Odyssey battery I use which has its terminals on the rear (compared to the OEM terminals facing front). Here's the picture...
The kit was a bit lacking for direct install, it needs some tweaking and connecting. It would be better if it came with some more prefab and then bolted right in out of the box. That aside, mine is three years and 15,000 miles old and works perfectly, lots of power for my grips and jacket.

I did the Omega system and I hope yours works as well as mine. Its a huge improvement vs the stock alt..400w:). No issues with the Omega install. Happy Trails, RandyR100/7 @ 355000:), still go'in strong.:thumb

I placed mine where the old one came from under the tank. I've had it there for four years now without a problem (~10,000 miles).

I did the Enduralast conversion last year on my 1981 RT. I mounted the Voltage Regulator under the tank where the old one was. It got pretty hot this past summer, so moved it to the same spot you did, behind and beside the battery. I had no problem mounting it there. Just had to sit and figure out the mounting using the little supplied "L" bracket on the bottom bolt with the supplied strap around the frame tube. works like a charm. a little tight with the wiring, but was able to get it done. Largest amount of time for the install was figuring out where to run wires and keep it nice and neat, ensuring no chance of chaffing.
Only complaint, not long enough wires and those weird connectors they supply. I opted to purchase some wire of correct colours and guage so that I could get it all in one long run and to solder all my connections. Used shrink tubing and tape to make sure no issues arise.
Actual power outage is fantastic. I have extra driving and fog lights, and run some heated clothing with no problems.

I think there must be a small regulator out there that does the same job and would fit better. Wires colors should be the same as original, wonder if they got a deal on white wire. I found a bolt that made the removal of the rotor much easier then the drift pin. I not really sure why I own an AirHead, I can do most of the work, but really would rather be riding then working on my Beemer.
Other then these minor issues, with the heated grips, I noticed no drop in voltage.
I want more running lights for day light, I find the standard system adequate for the drive to work in the dark but more is almost always better.
I know now I can get almost anything I might want and not have to worry about starting when I get some place.
I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in getting a better charging system. Just be sure you have a plan and I would recommend getting longer wires and give yourself lots of time.

Dunno what's different in our circumstances, but I had wire left over. I soldered all connections, which maybe saved me some wire (?) - I would have thought the other way around, but who knows. LOVE the system. Power aplenty.
