I have been thinking about getting an older Airhead to restore. I have come across a 1976 R75/7 for sale. Can anyone tell me what price range you feel would be correct for one that is in running condition. I don't have much info on it yet. Just wonder if it is worth finding out more about it?

thanks

Celeste

I question about if there is something wrong. R75's in 1976 were still /6's. Perhaps there is just an ignorance mistake; but it is worth checking. It also depends upon what use you are gonna put the machine to.

A bit of research here in the flea market or perhaps:

http://www.ibmwr.org/market/ will enlighten you in a rapid fashion.........

Good Luck......Dennis

No one pays more than $3500 for a good bike with a known history with the exception of a very few models. (R90S,R100RS or CS or Last Edition) or very low mileage that is believable.

Conversely, you're not likely to find anything in any condition for less than $500. I spent a thousand dollars on a dismantled R80/7 a few months ago. Maybe a little high but everything is there and the value of the parts is arguabley higher than that.

Celeste -

Did the ad provide the VIN for the bike? You can verify the model and build date by finding the VIN in this table:

http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/chassispages/enginechassis750.htm

They did build the R75/7 in 1976 as you can see from the table. Usually, though, the bikes built in the latter quarter of 1976 are considered 1977 models.

Yeah, I saw that bike when I was doing a crazedlist session yesterday and, come on airheads get over it, I would safely assume that it was a typo or manufactured date. It was a slash 7. Let it go.
Funny thing is, I can't find it today which answers your question. If they are correctly priced they are gone soon.

I can't believe how many common airheads that I am seeing for sale for $4000, $5000, $6000, $7000 .... wow, I wish. Proof of over priced is that they are not selling. I think that woodnsteel says it best.

Hi, Celeste,
And, don't forget, that since you read it on the internet, it MUST be true!

This is a question that is, in my opinion almost impossible to answer, but I will try. The maintenance history and recording of such are most important considerations. If it is missing or incomplete then the bike is questionable. I would pay less if this were not available. How much less? Oh, max about two thousand. And this would be with good cosmetics.

The R75/7 was a short production run before they moved to the R80/7, which makes it a bit more desirable from a collector's viewpoint, if you care about that. It had on paper, at least, a tiny bit more horsepower than the R80/7, though I don't know if everyone could tell much difference. If it was in good mechanical condition, had maintenance history and perhaps needed some cosmetic fixup, I'd give it serious consideration if the price was not too far north of $3K.
