I thought I would mention this in case everyone is feeling the problem has finally been rectified. I have an 08 R12RT that I purchased in late Sept of the same year and when I was in Montana this month it started showing the EWS sign intermittently but I was always able to get it started. It all most left me stranded in NE and in fact I had phoned BMW Road Side Assistance but then cancelled it the next morning when it decided to start. As far as I know Sundays and Mondays you can't find a BMW shop open for repairs. Long story short I finally managed to get it back to Greenville and they rectified the problem. If you have this type of ignition and you aren't sure about it then it may be a smart idea to have your dealer check the serial number on the ignition. If I'm correct they know what the serial number range is of the offending ignitions.

Just to add to your comments. Once the new components are replaced they have not seen any additional problems. I too have an 08 RT and went through the same thing, I still get a little nervous when I am 200 miles from home and turn on the ignition.

Thank goodness I did something right. I've got an 06 RT so I feel immune to this particular problem. Now it will probably fail.:whistle

If you are having an intermittant EWS issue it is NOT related to the old issue. It will not be the EWS antenna, but a subsidiary component. Often it is battery voltage, cables, or other conputer systems causing this.
It is not uncomon for techs to automatically swap the antenna as a troubleshooting method, though it rarely is an issue, even it it appears to have fixed the problem.
