View Full Version : 1984 R100 Brake Rotors

My front brakes have just now started making noise and the pads are gone. The rotor faces themselves have slight waves in them about 1/4" wide across the full braking surface. Very shallow but none the less there. Are these ruined or can they be reused? Can they be turned?

Thanks for help on researching this.

Near the inner diameter on the rotor should be the minimum thickness number embossed in the rotor. I think you'll find that the minimum thickness and starting thickness are fairly close, leaving little room to turn the rotor. Plus, you'll need someone who can really surface grind...I think it might be difficult to turn the rotor with all the holes. Probably the best thing is a system which pulls the rotor down onto a platform and then a grinder refinishes the exposed surface.

But in the end, I think there's little thickness to work with. For safety sake, the best thing to do is buy a new one.

Very common to turn rotors and drums on cars, however, you have three others to depend upon if one is bad or doesn't measure up...on a motorcycle, the safety factor is much less...and brakes are nothing to scrimp on...buy new and maybe save yer life by doin' so...

Ok. I have seen new for 160. to 225. any good places to recomend for these and pads?

I replaced mine when like yours with EBC Pro-Lite floating rotors. They retail now for $225 and most any dealer can order them from Tucker Rocky. I am quite happy with the setup.

Grimeca replacement rotors from Moto-bins is also a good choice. These are direct replacement similar to OEM in look. I replaced both front rotors on my 88 R100 RT a few years ago, and I'm very happy (and so is my pocketbook).

edit: The Motobins site has the replacement rotors at 77 pounds each which equates to about $123 each (based on a conversion rate of about 1.6).
