Won't start - battery or starter or?

I am new to BMW, just bought a '72 /5. Really enjoying it, rides like a dream. Had it about 2 months with no problems, starts on the first or second tap of the starter button until this week. Tried starting and it would crank and almost catch but not start. Cranking would run down the battery so I charged it but no improvement. It will not crank now, just makes a clicking sound like a car trying to start with a very low battery. Put in a brand new battery today, still makes the clicking sound and won't crank. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for that link, Kurt. He certainly is verbose, but there is plenty in there that I can use.
