Howdy - I just completed "Keying" - putting in the tumblers and springs - on a new top case for my R1100RT - it locks, but I cannot pull out the key in the unlocked position. Have I done something wrong, or is this just the way it is?

Sounds like you need to pull it out and try over again. I spent an hour the other night getting 2 system cases keyed properly to my existing ignition key.
After figuring it out the method it was easy.
The only way I can explain it in words is you know the proper pieces are in is when the key is inserted the pieces do not protrude and they are even with the cylinder. I hope that makes sense. Only the end piece will protrude
I would be willing to disassemble my lock and e-mail a photo to you. It took me awhile to determine what number tumbler to put it. Once I figured it out it was very easy. Once you figure out the proper combination of numbers write it down for future use.
Let me know if you want a photo showing what I mean.

Dano,
If you follow the factory instructions you will not be able to remove the key in the unlocked position. There is a great article on the IBMWR web site on how to modify your lock to allow you to remove the key when it's unlocked. You'll have to surf the archieves (sp?) but it's there. I found it last month when I rekeyed my top box.
Good luck!
