looking to put some on my 91K100RS, dealer said that a new handle bar is required too. I installed them on my 88K75S without replacing the handlebar, I just had to drill a hole for the wires to exit the bar in the center. Is there something I'm not understanding?
The bar is an additional $100 plus $200 for the grips. For that price I'm considering using the type that glue on the handlebar and you can use any grip type you like. Another question, BMW nolonger sells the heated grips as a kit, but sells the individual parts(lgrip, rgrip, harness, switch) If I use the other type of grips can I use the BMW harness and switch to power the grips?? thanks!:dunno

First off.. look at:
http://www.webparts.com/cycles/products.cfm?category=HEATED_ACCESSORIES
and: http://www.webparts.com/cycles/productdetail.cfm?ID=1116
Complete grip kits as far as I can see. I did check my EPC and it does only show a complete "kit" for your model - which includes the drilled bars. It's worth calling Hammersley to see if what they're showing is a set of two grips.
If so, and you want to keep your current bars, what you have to do is drill one hole on each end of the bars for the locking screws on the grip sleeves and one hole in the center of the bars for the wiring.
Same as you did on your K75S (which uses the same bars and grips..) So - it's 3 holes, not just one. It also is worth checking your current bars - lots of the bikes did get the pre-drilled bars even if they were delivered without heated grips.
To check your current bars - feel around on the front edge of the bars (the part facing the front of the bike), dead center between the clamps. If they were pre-drilled you'll feel a hole in that area about 3/8" in diameter.

Thanks Don, I called Hammersly they said the same, that the kit for that bike is discoutinued and that they sell the parts individually. Still have not decided on BMW or aftermarket, to be honest, the older style gray BMW grips put out a lot more heat then the new black "ribbed" type. Is there a problem using the BMW harness and switch with the aftermarket grips??
ps was hoping to get a chance to meet you at the RA ralley in WV but the weather didn't cooperate, maybe at the MOA in Ohio next year...

Had them on all the bikes and never any problems and I ride year round so they are worth the cost and its a plug and play except for the handle bar (but i've done it before) so no big deal. :bliss

Bummer that they discontinued the kit - the individual parts add up to lots more than the kit did.
If the aftermarket grips are the same wattage or lower there wouldn't be a problem using the BMW harness and switch. BMW used a length of resistive wire to provide the "low" heat setting (which is actually only about 30% less than high.)
If the wattage were greater than the stock BMW grips, I'd worry about burning this wire out. If less - no worry at all.

Maybe - although given the choice between Ohio (I haven't heard wonderful things about the area the rally is going to be in, except it makes anyplace you come from look good) and Tennesse (where RA is going to be), I might tend to go south instead of west. Haven't put either on the calendar yet - haven't gotten my 2005 calendar. :p

Best,
That may be a wise choice indeed. That part of Ohio is that part that most people try to get across as quickly as possible.

Hey BMW Folks;
I am also in need of a left hand grip only.
Following the link I find only kits and have read that they are not available anymore.
As for grips only - anyone found them?

...old thread, but...
I was trying to install heated grips on my 91 k100rs tonight and I had some difficulty finding the connections on the wiring harness. I guess my basic question is whether or not all K bikes come wired for the BMW heated grip kit. If so, any tips on where I need to (specifically) look?
thanks

I have installed the cheap stuff on the BMWs I have owned,
Snowmobile grips... Electrical tape configuration which sticks to the handlebars then put in a on/off/on switch and hook it direct to either an extra fuse box for my other accessories or an inline fuse.
I have also removed the wire attachments for the power plug above the coils and have that also wired direct to the battery via a fuse. This way I can run mega watts without messing with the fine wiring of the machine.
My electric vest puts out 95 watts at idle. the heated grips is 48 watts on high and 27 on low.
heated grips kits are around 30 bucks via Riderwearhouse or find them on some snowmobile web site. Yes, there is some problems with an alternative source of parts. Need to tape the right throttle grip. due to throttle grip movement.
take care...

thanksThey all came with the connector. It's taped off to the left side top frame tube (looking at the bike from the rear) about opposite the electrical box. From memory - it's a small 3-pin connector (or it could be two pins, but pretty sure it's 3..)

BTW on our '86 K12RSes, I used snowmobile heater slugs inside the handle bar end and wired them to the BMW four pin connector at the hole in the center of the bar. Then used the BMW switch and wiring harness which worked really well for hi-off-lo switching at the handlebar pad mounted switch. We had foam handle bar grips that really got hot on hi and nice on lo and we got to choose any replacement grips we desired.

If you try: http://www.webparts.com/diagram.php?btnr=32_0770&mospid=47866&hg=32&fg=15 - They list all the parts, but no "kit" that I can see..
