Tack and speedometer work ok. resetable odometer and total mileage odometer both stopped at the same time. Any chance of an easy fix on this??? or replace the whole instrument cluster??

Well - depends on what you call "easy" - this failure is typically the gear from the motor to the odometer assembly failing, and BMW doesn't have it as a replacement part.
So - what to do?
Some people buy a junked instrument pod for parts, and if you're lucky - the junked one will still have a good gear.
An alternative is: http://www.speedometer.com/ - they claim to be able to fix K bike odometers
Or: http://www.paspeedo.com/bmwcompletek.htm (an advertiser in the BMW-MOA Owners News
And if you want to DIY - you might check: http://www.odometergears.com/ for the gear(s) - he doesn't list the K bike Motometer instruments specifically, but if you look on:
http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/bmw.html
Some of those gears look awfully familiar.
