Starter is staying engaged for approx. 1/2 second when starting, but always releases. How involved is it to remove a starter? I have read I can clean and lube it without disassembling the starter once it is out of the bike. Any details would be appreciated. Thank you.

Clean and lube: don't know.

To remove the starter from an RT the reprom says...

remove seat
disconnect battery
remove tank rail
remove left hand trip panel
remove left side tank cover
remove left footrest plate
remove starter cable and started signal cable
remove two screws
remove starter (8) with locator (5)

Got the starter out in 45 min. using the handy-dandy T25 from the basic tool kit and my T45 for the starter bolts. Cleaned the starter and lubed shaft lightly and reassembled in 25 min. Starts and retracts as it should.
Thanks again guys!
