Does anyone have a list of the services to be performed at 6k?
Assuming I can wrench, do I really need to take to a dealer so I don't void my warranty?
I do this on other bikes and keep meticulous records and receipts.
Thanks guys.

Thanks guys. The 6K service is one of the simpler ones. You might look on A&S Cycles website - they have some service schedules listed.. and all the hexhead ones are pretty much the same.
From memory:
Oil and filter change
Valve adjustment
TB Sync check
Tire/brake check (pressure, wear)
You'll find info on doing all these items in the DIY section.. :)
My bike hasn't been in the shop since the 600 mile service, except for a brake line and EWS recall/service campaign. What I do (and feel free to do whatever you want, and I'm not going to discuss Magnuson-Moss with the inevitable people who feel otherwise..) is - I buy all my parts for the services from the dealer I expect to do warranty work if any is needed. It accomplishes several things:
It keeps the dealer on my side if a question came up on warranty
It demonstrates I at least bought the needed parts at regular intervals - so it's likely I used them to service my bike
It eliminates any question on using the correct parts/fluids by BMW if there was a warranty claim (and that's a question they are absolutely entitled to ask.. which could delay a warranty claim being settled.)
I do buy my tires from sources other than the dealer, and have another source mount them - so it's not like I finished the pitcher of coolaid.. :) But - the dealer knows my face, I chat with the parts people when I'm there, say HI to the service department, say HI to the sales department - generally - try to behave like I like the dealership (I do..) and they will remember that if a warranty problem comes up.
As I said before - I won't argue whatever anyone else feels they want to do, or what they think is fair/legal/moral or whatever. It's what *I* do. And that's all it is.

Thanks, Don. I appreciate the response. I want to do the work myself and plan to, just concerned about warranty. I will buy the stuff from my dealer to have a paper trail, especially the fluids.

Don't forget to check out http://www.bmwrt.com/. Under the hexhead forum you will find the maintenance schedules and what they entail. A great help for me. I keep a log book of the entire maintenance I do. I keep these as checklists in addition to the log. Other that the 600 mile service my bike has never seen the dealership and I know have 20K on the bike. Here is the thread for the maintenance data (http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=298975#Post298975). Just click on the link for the schedules. Enjoy!

An unofficial list for both 6K and 12K service that I created for my '05 GS can be found here (http://www.snafu.org/pics/r1200gs/service.pdf) (pdf format). I assume that most hexhead services will be quite similar. The big difference between the older and newer bikes is the brake service. The older bikes take at least twice the work.
I keep completed forms in a binder along with receipts. Service notes such as valve clearances vefore adjustement, rotor thickness, etc., are noted on the back of the form.

Are you guys using the 911 to read the fault codes?

I am. When I recently did a 6K service on the RT I had to clear a low battery fault probably left over from winter storage, plus a tailight bulb fault from when I connected the aux LED tailight.
The best reason to have the GS-911 if you're going to do your own service, is for syncing the throttle bodies. The latest beta version of software for the GS-911 allows you to lock the idle actuators while doing the sync. I have a TwinMax and have used it both with and without locking the actuators, and can say from direct experience that it's much easier and a LOT more precise when you do use the lock. The difference in smoothness since I did the sync this way is something I would not have believed if I hadn't experienced it.
That said, I find it a bit odd to have my laptop plugged into the bike along with the TwinMax and watching the ECM stats in real time while tuning the engine, a radical difference from tuning the 1957 500cc Norton ;)

That sounds real cool - on the wish list!

Yes. I start a service by reading fault codes and end the service after my test ride by clearing all faults. This ensures that any faults caused by the service are cleared.
I've also used the real-time features of the GS-911, but mainly for play to see what it can do. Let's see..... This is what the starter does to the poor battery on my GS.

Annual bonus time arrived. I just ordered myself a GS911 - can't seem to resist the toys. :-)

Does the GS911 do this?
Not yet. At least not yet on the hexheads. I'm waiting for that function, too. Since the new bikes have different brakes I suspect they are in no hurry to provide that function although it is on their list of coming attractions.
What else will GS-911 bring?
Following that, the road-map is not set in stone (development will not necessarily be in this order) and because of that, Pls don't ask us exact or even estimated time-lines on these:
expanding service functionality on the remaining ABS systems (integral ABS of R1150 and non-CAN R1200/K1200, ABS on R1200 and K1200 modes)
expanding the CAN-based Service & Maintenance functionality (for all K1200, R1200, F800 etc)
expanding Service & Maintenance functionality for other control units in the CAN-based model range
The current function chart can be seen at http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/function-chart
