What is the correct procedure to lock the fork lock on this machine? About how many degrees should the handle bars be turned for the lock to engage? The cylinder moves but does not engage the detent.

I may be sticking my neck out here.
If it is like the one on my /7; you push in on the key while turning the key counter clockwise while moving the handlebars towards the far right. At some point while moving the handlebars to the right the key will push in. At this point continue to hold the key in and rotate the key back clockwise, remove the key and the forks will be locked.

And....
Now that you know how to use the fork lock, don't bother using it. That lock is a snap (No pun intended...) to defeat with a hard yank on thebars and no one really want to stal old BMW's anyway.

Don't use it... some nimrod will mount your bike and hammer the bars back and forth a few times jamming the pin that extends to prevent movement of the steering. Try fixing that easily.

IIRC, it can be engaged with the bars turned either right or left. It will engage close to, but not at, full lock. It usually takes a bit of wiggling the bars with the key turned and light pressue inward. All security devices are only there to deter casual theft, so I think it's worth using.
