This Sunday a friend of mine was rear-ended on his K1200RS. He's OK, but his bike is a mess. The impact broke the driveshaft housing, broke the wheel spokes, etc. My question is, should one expect the transmission to be affected? I'm sure the BMW techs at the local shop will be able to tell, but are there any things to look at to be sure. Any other hidden problems that can be expected. Thanks

In a case like this - he should push to have the bike totaled and let the car drivers insurance company pay for a replacement. With this much of a hit - there can be hidden problems that won't surface until later on if the bike is fixed (a friend had his R11 hit from the rear - not as hard as this one, and 3 months after he got it back the rear-drive main bearing went out..)

I'd be looking for a new bike if I was this person.

With Don on this one. My first K100 got hit from behind, managed to ride it home but once the shock wore off I realized that while the rear wheel was straight enough to hold air, the forks were bent way out of shape. It got totaled based on the forks and gas tank/fairing damage so we never got around to seeing what else might be broken.
