My left signal has been staying on ocassionally (constant on, even with key off, out). If i pull and re-seat the fuse, it resets itself (along with clock). This happened today after several very short-hop trips around a 2 mile radius while shopping. The bike has not been run for two weeks. I pulled the fuse, put it back, and when i went to hit the starter button--nothing. Slight clicking sound, then voltage on the gauge dropped to 8.5v and stayed there. No fuel pump whir, no lights. Did I fuse the starter relay?

Fuse #3 is blown, the one that says "other equipment" on the clear cover. I have not engaged any accessories at all.

Low voltage start=fused started relay?

The clicking sound is the sound of the relay - still working. If it fuses closed - the battery will be discharged rather rapidly.

I'd try to track down what is draining the battery - I'm guessing either the signal-relay, or a wiring harness problem. Fix that - recharge the battery and see if it starts.

Thanks Don....it went from 'click' to fizzle to nothing....no voltage. If it fused closed, how will it restart?

If it is fused closed - a wack with a screwdriver handle will sometimes free it up - otherwise - it's new relay time.

Are you sure your battery isn't bad? A couple months ago my K1 acted similar to what you describe except for the blown fuse. It had been starting fine all day, went to start it to pull it into the garage after a 200 mile ride and it clicked, then fizzled, then nothing. It turned out to be a bad battery.

quite possible! I could use a new battery anyway! It hasn't had a new battery for at least 4 years when the PO put one in. And the next PO didn't have it on trickle charge all winter.

Tried jumping it right now and the bank cranked over but didn't catch. My guess is a dead battery. PS, the residual charge left in the battery overnight allowed me to hear the relay clicking when i pushed the starter button, before i jumped it.

If you keep pushing the button you will fuse the contacts on the relay. Last I saw they list for something like $80 or so (more in CN $$$ prolly..)

At this point, i'm assuming putting in a new battery is the way to go. Current battery is over 4 years old....Since the bike turned over, it is not the relay or the starter...

UPDATE: I got it towed home, and it's on the trickle charger. We'll see how the battery is tomorrow!

No fuel pump. Power to FI relay pin #86. Now i have to check if there is power to the connector at the tank. If not, then it's either the relay or, if the connector has power, then the pump..boo.

It was a discharged battery. Secondary issue was the fuel pump harness got dislodged during towing (which is why it didn't jump start). Started up and runs better than ever, and the battery charged up full on a tricle (tender) overnight. :whistle

Only symptom so far is that the fuel pump whine/cycle at ignition switch 'on' isn't audible--only after the bike is running (at which point the fp is audible). If i 'pulse' the starter button quickly, i can hear it 'prime' itself. My BMW mechanic of 30 years says as long as it starts and runs, don't worry about it!:dunno

Cheers!

That's normal.

So maybe the fact i could hear the pump whine for 5 seconds before engaging the starter wasn't normal all this time?

Hmmm...
I may be wrong, but I thought I remembered the pump just with the starter on the K100. On the K1200, I think the pump ran when you turned on the key for a few seconds.
