With not many months on my bike's factory warranty left to go, I'm wondering about buying an extended warranty.

I still don't have a lot of miles (10K) on my '02, so I feel there may be problems as more mileage accumulates, and the warranty is long gone.

Comments please!

I always purchased extended warranties for my Harley's and it was always a wise choice, due to the many problems, however, when I purchase my new RT in December, I will not purchase the extended warranty.

What is the cost of the warranty?

With the price of any major repair to more than likely exceed the price of the warranty, it's a coin toss. If the miles you have accumulated so far are any indication of your future average, I'd pass. I'm a big fan of extended warranties if your putting on high miles. Once again, it's a coin toss...so check your pocket and give it a fling. IMHO!

Let me tell you about my 03 K1200LTC.

It has 11,600 miles-bought new in Daytona at Bike Week 03.

Warranty visits Number

1. The windshield would get hung up and would not retract into the correct fairing down position. Dealer replaced the windshield--defective curvature and improper alignment.

2. BMW recall on possible defective fuel lines on k bikes within my VIN # range. Dealer replaced O-Rings or seals used in the lines.

3. ABS brake problems. dealer found a defective sensor replaced it as well as a recall on defective brake pads on the rear.

4. Throttle problems-- Upon inspection the dealer found that both the throttle cables were binding and causing the throttle to stick and not return when turned loose. This was also why the cruise control wouldn't work correctly and just shut off automatically. Replacement of the 2 cables was required.

5. ABS problems again--This time much more serious. I had a complete failure of my braking system 2 times on the same day and immediately took it to the dealer for check. It was diagnosed with a complete failure of the ABS brain module.

Keep in mind that with all these problems my dealer is 200 miles away and all the time and trouble I have had in dealing with these ongoing problems. My bike now sits in the dealers shop waiting on the $1800 ABS module and has been there 2 weeks and no parts in yet. The dealer has been good about my problems so I can't fault their handling of my issues. I still have about a year or so of factory warranty.

If you plan on keeping you bike I HIGHLY recommend you purchase the extended warranty.

P.S. Wanna by a K1200LTC?
