Does anyone know if the BMW saddlebags from a 1987 K100 are compatible with a 1994 K75?
Thanks in advance!

They are 100% compatible, in that they will fit on the same mounts. Lock types
& styling may be different.

The bags will fit. There are 3 different bags (not including the "city bags". The first series had the flat locks covered by a little tab. The second series had tumbler locks; the key went in from the inside (side the bike is on). The third series also had tumbler locks and the key went in from the outside. Both the second and third series can be keyed the same as the ignition switch.

Thank each of you for your responses. After reading, I feel confident that the 1987 bags will work and I have purchased.
I will need to order locks for the old bags because the owner has lost the keys.
Will I need anything special to mount the bags to BMW rails? I've already purchased the rails.

Hi, Ed,
You may not have to purchase locks if, in fact, they are still available. Lift the tab. I believe there will be a 2-digit number visible. A dealer "might" have or be able to obtain some of the keys. Bob's BMW, I believe, has some keys. Someone who currently has this type of bag may be able to confirm (or refute) the above.

Phil, thanks a bunch for the information! When the bags arrive, I'll check with Bob's BMW.

Hey Ed, stop.
Go get the key out of your bike, Put it in the lock, try it. Lube it up, you may have to slide it in and out while turning, and jiggling but I have 5 sets of saddlebags, and 2 trunks, keys from any of my bikes (my 2, my 2 son's and 2 parts bikes That's 6 diffrent sets of keys)work on all the saddlebag locks.
I bet you’re thinking ... any of my keys start the other bikes, or open the fuel tank? The answer is no, I have found that bike keys are not interchangeable, but saddlebag keys are with a little coaxing and finesse.
But don't tell anyone. :thumb

But this only applys to the bags with locks that use the same key as the Ign.
Not the 1st gen bags.

Or grind down the 2 posts the screws go thru Thats what I have done a couple times, works fine, and saves $33

Thanks Chuck. I took your suggestion and ground the mount posts today. Works fine! After installing the bags, which mounted fine (I had questioned if the 1987 K100 Integral bags would work fine with my 1994 K75) I noticed that the latches do not pull the bag halves tightly together. Does anyone know if there is a way to tighten up the latches? These are the bags with locks that are hidden behind the small rectangular plate that lifts up. THe brackets are riveted onto the bags. Also, in the old style bags, is there a seal between the two bag halves that can be replaced?
Thanks!

I would say that the seal is the best place to start, if youare questioning them at all and the bag halves are loose.
Number I came up with:
08 Gasket 5X1560MM qty 2 46542300042

Another question for those of you with saddlebag experience:
I have first generation bags. The halves did not pull together tightly, so I took advice and ordered new gaskets. The old gaskets were dry and cracked. However, the new gaskets did not help the bags pull together any tighter than they did with the old gaskets. After examining, it appears to me that the latches are the problem. Perhaps they are simply worn out. I priced new latches (newer style) and locks, and they are $256 --- too much.
Any one ever worked on the old style latches and had any success making them close tighter? I'm about to drill out the rivets to see what I can do.
Thanks,
Ed

Before you get the drill out.. on my FYK100RT - I put some O rings around the tabs on the non-latch part that the latch fastens over. The O rings were thick enough to take up the wear in the latch/latch-receiver. That tightened things up nicely. I seem to recall having to replace them periodically - probably once a year or so.

Do you remember what the O-rings you used were intended to fit? Were they for plumbing? Size? Looking at the latches, I can see how that would work! Thanks!

Ed, I have boxes of O rings kicking around.. just looked until I found some that fit. I think I used ones with 1/16" cross-section through the rubber..

Found some 0-rings. That was a quick, easy fix to get by with for awhile. Thanks!!
